Default moving audio past start

How do I get reaper to allow me to position audio before the start of the timeline? I know I can slide items so that they hang off the start of the timeline, but I can't figure out how!!

Hello purj and welcome to (posting in) these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information.

You can move the contents of the clip by using Alt+drag.

Default without doing that

That causes the item to loop. There is a different way, as I've done it before, but my use of Reaper is so casual I forget these things. Anyone else know? I seem to remember it being some kind of setting...

Not if you turn off "Loop item source" in Item Settings first.

Default ok that's fine, but

I'm actually looking for the setting that allows us to slide the items back past the start of the project. I've done it before I just can't remember the setting right now.

You mean dialing in a negative project start time perhaps ?

This can be done in File -> Project Settings -> Project start time

Default no, not quite

I just want the items to be able to slide past the start. The start should remain at 0. I believe I've had it set up before where I slide items to start before the beginning (i.e., to have their audio hidden before the start of the track). I thought it would be a quick answer in the forum, but the fact that it isn't makes me think maybe I'm wrong…

Thanks everyone for your input!

Wouldn't it be easier to move everything else later? There are several ways to do that.

A lot of dudes start their projects at bar 3 or 5, I like to start music projects at bar 11. Lots of preroll, and I don't need to shift anything if I need to add or extend an intro.

Default probably the best solution

You use the ripple editing option to move everything else, right?

Thanks!

Ripple editing all tracks will work but its fiddly and you might forget to turn it off.

I would make a time selection from bar 1 to 11. Then right-click the ruler and choose "Insert empty space in selection". That will move your markers and everything later by the exact length of the time selection.

The opposite, removing a section from all tracks at once is to make a selection, right-click ruler then choose "remove contents of selection (moving later items)"
