All stop! Quick quiet!
How can I create a keyboard shortcut to instantly kill all sound coming from Reaper? I can mute the master volume but then any sound from the Media explorer still plays. I can make a keyboard shortcut for the explorer too but I need (want?) one emergency key to kill all sound. Any help appreciated.

Have you tried making a custom action (macro) which runs both of these actions?

I looked into that but it seems the action list is totally separate for reaper and the media explorer. They also seem to function as two separate applications. Even if I have a shortcut for reaper, if the media explorer is highlighted the reaper shortcut does not work (and vise versa). So, unless I am wrong, there is no way to stop both with a single keystroke.

if you could only route the media explorer audio to a track in your project, this user's issue would be resolved...

Great idea! Does anyone know if this can be done?

You could use something like auto hotkey to set up a key command that would activate both the stop transport command and the explorer playback.
The explorer might have to be the active window though.... hmmm I'll give this a shot when I get a chance to see if it works.

not unless you physically route a line out and then back into your sound card...

Can I ask what the reason is for this?
How often do you have audio coming from both your Media Explorer and your Session Window at the same time? I wouldnt think too often.
Yeah....space bar? O.o

I don't trust a software-only solution to this; I use a monitor controller.

I only want (need?) this because volume levels can differ dramatically between different sources and I need an emergency kill switch for very loud sounds.
On a related note, if I set up something to mute the sound in the Windows volume mixer the Reaper sound still comes through. How is this possible?

I've seen (heard) a frozen pc with loud noise coming out of the soundcard. Only a real hardware switch can mute the signal to the speakers. Unless the pc is on your desk and you can pull the cord out.

Once in a while my Jamstix crashes, leaving a LOUD noise
that cannot be stopped by software - the computer must be
reset.... so I have a monitor control with a "mute" button
right next to the mouse for this very reason.

I bought a Presonus Central Station. Quite a lot of money with the remote unit included and I felt pangs of guilt as I ordered it -I thought I was being a bit extravagant.
All those thoughts vapourised as soon as I had set it up on my desk, connected it up and started using it. You feel in control and you feel supremely confident. I can switch in reference sources and headphones; swap monitors; cue to wherever I've set up a live area; replay a recording to the live area; talk to the talent with a push-button; and of course, mute the monitors...
I haven't thought about the cost of the thing since.
Whatever hardware you get it's a big step in the right direction. You'll understand as soon as it's working for you...
