Default Routing Question

I am wondering if it is possible to route an input from my audio interface (RME Fireface UFX) to my laptop speakers?

Thanks
Richard

Yes. page 22 of the Reaper user guide shows how to do this.

Thanks for the tip but I already looked at that.

I can select an input channel from the Audio Interface but it doesn't show any output channels to the laptop audio.

Open Reaper and turn monitoring on on a record armed track set to the inputs. Use ASIO4ALL instead of ASIO in order to use your laptops speakers

Thanks Fergler,

I was hoping that might work but ASIO4ALL only shows the first 2 of the 30 channels of my RME Fireface UFX.

I want to be able to pick any Fireface channel and route it to my laptop speakers?

I'm on mac, so maybe it's different.

In Preferences, Audio->Device, tick "Allow use of different input and output devices". Then select laptop speakers as output.

no expert here.
take anything I saw with a large bucket of salt.

can you use the TotalMix software that comes with the RME?
I find it helpful to have both of its windows open. that way, when you make a change on one (like the mixer), it shows up right away on the other (routing matrix).

You need to enable the inputs in the ASIO4ALL settings first

Many workaround methods have been mentioned (and I'm aware that workarounds are sometimes necessary in Windows) but the 'normal' way of using multiple devices (which is what you aim to do) is to make what's called an aggregate device.

Make an aggregate device with your OS audio utility (Audio MIDI Setup for OSX, ASIO4ALL for Windows. Select your interface and then the built-in output in this case for the aggregate). Now select this aggregate device in Preferences/Audio/Device in Reaper. You will now have all the I/O from both devices to assign in Reaper. There's also a button right on the Preferences/Audio/Device page to open Audio MIDI Setup or ASIO4ALL for you.

Try that first.

There is also the 'legacy' option in the Preferences/Audio/Device page and proprietary routing features in some interfaces that can be tried for workarounds for non-standard devices.

Wow. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to try them in the next day or so. Will let you know.

I forgot to mention that I'm using Windows 8 64-bit.

Thanks again

I now have a different cabling system so routing a channel to the laptop is not needed.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
