well, it seems that alot of decent quality multitrack stems are now available thanks to people hacking rockband discs

they are stems, drums, guitars, bass, vocals, backing vocals --

and they can give a great insight into a song.

Maybe. Probably. Though if you have the Rock Band game it might be legal or not depending on the game's license.

What has Microsoft to do with it? AFAIK is Rock Band NOT developed by Microsoft. Also since for OGG Vorbis (unlike MP3) you don't have to pay any licensing and there are no claims it is very popular for in game sound, etc...

oh yeah I'm a huge ogg fan,- I always thoughts rock band was partly done by Microsoft game studios,- like fable2, gears2, fallout -and all the other games which they seem to have a part in.

Microsoft even made fable2 use silverlight for the fable2 webiste,- which I was extremely annoyed about being a linux user...

Since you are a fan you might like that fact that they used Vorbis in Fable: The Lost Chapters (according to http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/Games_that_use_Vorbis anyway).

A little sidenote Microsoft is most times only the publisher and not the developer of such games. Even though they own the developer studios, like Lionhead, who BTW used Vorbis also for Black & White 2. So just being owned by Microsoft doesn't mean you have to use only Microsoft compliant stuff. Just read through the above list if you want more infos.

Hmm, when I export multi from Audacity, I always end-up with two tracks which are stereo with one channel missing, while the originals, and all the other tracks, are mono. Why is that? A bug in Audacity?

Since ogg export from Reaper is broken for me, and has been for years, I can only render to wav from Reaper to get the mono file back. Would be a whole lot easier if I could get all the files standard mono like they show up in in Audacity...

I got wavs multitrack from Nirvana (5 of em), Bob Marley (3) Stevie Wonder, Queens (BBC one) and so on, they're insanely big but awesome for mixing mastering !

Can i convert mogg to midi ?

Things I've learned thus far, The dude from Boston could really belt it out, The Dead were shockingly sloppy, and all the Police tracks sound uninspired solo, but when they're put together, it's like magic.

There were no technological substitutes back then for real talent and engineering acumen - just about everything was done manually and on the fly. You screw it up, we start again!

'Live mixing' sounds particularly butt-puckeringly nerve-wracking!

I'm hoping for some more Dinosaur Jr. tracks, the game is galled GUITAR hero after all. I was extremely impressed with 'Feel the Pain'. When I load the stems in Reaper, I swear it sounds way better than the original....

I kind of wondering how the leaking of all these moogs could affect future releases.

For example, if Sir Paul, Ringo and Yoko knew that minutes after the Beatles Rock Band edition is out, so are the stems, they may think twice.

Also, what particularily excites me is the prospect of using all of these files with Melodyne DNA when it comes out...

The megaupload links were deleted, I think. There is a pair of torrent links in this thread still.
Or do a search in any torrent search engine, that's the fastest way to get this files.

- This is awesome, I've been wanting some good examples of solo bass and guitar tracks so I can get used to just how much of a good "guitar" sound is actually that damn four-string.

- Regarding the legal issue, I can't see how it would be any less legal than sharing the songs themselves. Not that I, or anyone here, would ever stoop to... um... *cough*.
