Reaper crash when inserting plugins with modified user default presets (FIXED)
In the past few months I've had issues with inserting plugins with user saved default presets when reaper is playing.
I'm on Windows 8.1 x64 with the x64 version of Reaper 4.581.
Initially, I suspected a bug in the reaper EQ ReaEQ. I would often get a hang and crash when inserting ReaEQ with playback active. This would happen maybe 1 in 4 times, but only during playback. ReaEQ is probably the only frequently used plugin that I have saved a default user preset for. It's nothing extreme, just 6 bands; a HP at 30Hz, LS at 150Hz, Notch at 300Hz, Notch at 2k, HS at 6k, and a LP at 24k.
Today, I loaded up an instanse of BlueCat's Protector2, a brickwall limiter. I decided to save a user default with the output set to -0.3dB instead of the default 0dB. I deleted the instance and reinserted the plugin again, but this time with my new user default preset set to automatically load, and reaper hung and crashed just like when I try to insert reaeq during playback.
I think there may be an issue with default user presets. Could it have to do with location of the presets?

OK. I tried running reaper as administrator and it still crashes everytime when I try to insert ReaEQ or BlueCat's Protector2 on a track with playback active. These are the only two plugins that have user saved default presets. They insert just fine when playback is stopped, but freeze reaper nearly every time they are inserted with playback active.

Here's some more investigative info:
I went to reaper's preset folder here:
C:\Users\Doug\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\presets
and moved the vst-reaeq.ini, and the vst-BC Protector 2 VST.ini preset files to my desktop, effectively removing them from reaper, and the plugins now load just fine when a project is playing and I insert them. Granted, I loose my custom made default presets. This confirms that it's an issue with user presets at least on my system.
I wonder if it has to do with Windows 8.1 folders? I though that Admin mode might work, but it made no difference. I'm going to put my presets back and then create a portable install and see if the bug still happens.

I get a (Not Responding) message in the window titlebar and reaper just hangs. I can force quit it. I have also in the past just let it run overnight, waiting for the program to respond, hoping that it would fix itself.
I'm not sure if a crash log is ever created. I'll check and report it.
I wanted to report back from my post above. I created a portable install, hoping that the issue had something to do with the preset location. I get the same (Not Responding) message with a portable install too when inserting ReaEQ or any FX with a user made preset while playback is active.
I'm going to dig in and see if any crash logs were generated.

I hope this helps. I'm going to try using the portable install on my laptop and see if I get the same application hang.

I tried the same thing on my old laptop, which also has a default user preset saved for ReaEQ and I get the same crash.

It didn't seem to generate the same error info as on the other PC. I'll try again...

Can you make a licecap of the process, and give us a copy of your reaper.ini and vst-reaeq.ini?
Edit: actually, before that, go to the pre-release forum and try 4.59pre6 or later

I didn't see your edit until posting this. I've gone ahead and created a licecap of the behavior and uploaded the requested ini files.
I'll go to the pre-release forum and get the latest version.
Edit:
Here's the licecap.

How large is the .GIF? You may want to try the Stash instead.

Thanks much Justin! v4.59pre6a fixed it! Initial tests are looking good here. I'll put it through it's paces tomorrow morning in the studio. It's in the middle of the night over here right now.
Cheers,
Doug

Cool, there are some slight tweaks coming in pre7 to make it a bit safer, too, so hopefully you'll get to test that and it will be good too.

Cool. I'll keep an eye out for pre7.
I've been testing pre6a a lot in the studio this morning, and the bug seems to be squashed. Not a single hang yet when inserting plugins with custom default presets while playback is engaged.
