Default Notation Sibelius Action List

I'm working on a 'Sibelius Action list' to share with the community. This should in theory give the same workflow to a user coming from Sibelius (with as few differences as possible, but maybe even better than Sibelius).

(note, NumLock must be on for this to work)

https://stash.reaper.fm/32946/ReaNote18.ReaperConfigZip <<--newest!

https://stash.reaper.fm/32266/ReaNote17.ReaperConfigZip

Here's what I have so far

A,B,C,D,E,F,G - input note.
-up/down raises or lowers the pitch 1 semitone.
-ctrl up/down raises or lowers the pitch 1 octave.
-1-8 add interval above the selected note.

num-pad - change note lengths whole, half, quarter etc. 456123.
__________Num4 = quarter
__________Num5 = half
__________Num6 = Whole
__________Num1 = 32nd
__________Num2 = 16th
__________Num3 = 8th

Holding ALT does the same thing, but with triplets!
Ctrl . will add a 'dot'.

Ctrl-Alt 1/2/3/4 = Change midi note channel for selected notes. New notes will also be created in this channel.

navigate
-Arrow keys select previous / next note
-Alt-up/down = Select note (up/down) in a chord
-Ctrl-Shift-A = Select chord
-Alt-Right/Left = Select next/previous note with same pitch
-Shift left/right adds previous/next note to selection
-Shift up/down adds lower/higher note to selection
-ctrl left/right move cursor forward/backward 1 bar*
-Ctrl-Alt left/right move cursor forward/backward 1 grid.
-ctrl-alt-shift + right/left = scrolling
-ctrl-alt-backspace = cycle through reaper windows (like alt-tab in Windows).
-ctrl-F = Float Instrument *needs .lua*

-ctrl A select all
-alt A deselect all
-Num7 notate as natural
-Num8 = notate as sharp
-Num9 = notate as flat
-Z stem direction down
-X stem direction up
-ctrl-shift-up move note to upper staff
-ctrl-shift-down move note to lower staff

-ctrl num+/- zoom in/out vertically
-num+/- zoom in/out horizontally
-T Change time signature/tempo.

Some non-sibelius hotkeys I've added
M Navigate edit cursor to start of selected events
, Navigate edit cursor to end of selected events
shift A selects all notes in measure
Ctrl A: Select all notes
Alt A: Deselect all notes
Ctrl Shift A Select all notes in measure
Ctrl-Shift-Click-drag Select notes and timeloop.**
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Down This will select the same notes in the next track, that you currently have selected.
Ctrl-Shift B Add bar to end of file.

Alt-Space - Play from start of file.
Ctrl-L Loop-play selected notes.

L: make selected notes legato
(adds slur and slight overlap)
Ctrl W "staccato" (adds staccato articulation and switches notes to channel 2).
Ctrl W "portato" (adds portato articulation and switches notes to channel 3).
Ctrl . = Make note dotted.
x = Selected notes to 'upper' voice, stems up.
z = Selected notes to 'lower' voice, stems down.
Ctrl-T = Add Text

alt T Minimize ties
S = toggle snap to grid (changed split to alt-S)
V = view tracks
Backspace Undo last note input.

Moving the cursor and notes
ctrl-alt left/right = move cursor by grid
ctrl left/right = move cursor by measure
ctrl-shift left/right = move cursor by pixel
Do the same with Num 4-6 = move notes the same way

Ctrl-R = Rename current note (useful for keyswitches).
Ctrl-Double-Click = Rename current note (I like this better). **

Ctrl-F = Float Instrument VSTi***

Non-Midi

Ctrl-Alt-0 = Set effects for selected tracks Offline
Ctrl-Atl-O = Set effects for selected tracks Online

**Download Mouse Modifiers Here
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/29997/ReaN...MIDI_PIANOROLL

*** Float Instrument from score view requires this LUA
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/30462/float%20instrument.lua

What I haven't been able to achieve
click a bar to select bar (there's 'edit: Select all notes in measure, I'm trying to put is as a 'mouse modifier' but there's no option to take something from the action menu in the 'piano roll' mouse modifier section. It would be brilliant if Reaper could make this graphically identical to Sibelius (click a bar, a nice blue highlight, do what you want to the bar).

ctrl left/right to select first note in previous/next bar (though I have something similar).
alt up/down select higher/lower note in a chord
I think devs need to create an action "Navigate: select higher note" "Navigate: select lower note"
Numbers 1-9 create an interval above the selected note,
I managed to do this kindof, if the note is selected and you press M to get the edit cursor in the right place, you can press a number and it will add the pitch that man semitones above. Holding shift will do the same for intervals below. Adding ctrl will allow for double digits, e.g. ctrl-shift-0 makes the interval that many semitones below. ctrl-2 adds 1 octave above.
click an empty space 'grab' to move the 'page' around.
(That nice little 'grabbing hand' should appear.

I'm glad to finally contribute something; hope this helps (and this is the right forum). Let me know if anything's missing (that Sibelius has). I'm constantly updating this in order to achieve the optimal workflow.

If anyone has a question how to program a certain event, ask, and I'll write how I did it here.

Custom Actions

For note lengths

set length for next note
edit: set note length

For inserting pitches

edit: unselect all
edit: insert note at nearest A

Great work! I've been stumbling through doing some of the same stuff myself, but a lack of free time is slowing me down. Thanks for working on this!

@Mr. PC
Not a Sibelius user from a long time, but, yes THANK YOU for your effort.
I'll test it as soon as possible: but how do I access to it?

If you click the link in my first post, and then "download" is should give you the "Reaper Key Map" file, which you should be able to "import" in the "action list" preferences (make sure the access the action list from a midi/notation window. Pressing '?' brings up the action list).

I'm hoping to get time to work on this tomorrow.

Thank you for your reply.

Can you give me the name of an action to perform a search to check import?

Since I'm on Mac, hope the NumLock trick works…

Not sure what you mean, but here's a pic which might help,

https://stash.reaper.fm/v/27680/keyma...structions.png

I'm realizing a big problem with this system still,

if I press a key, e.g. "A", it will input an A of whatever note-type I have selected. e.g. if I had already pressed num-pad '4' it would create that A as a quarter-note. If I change my mind, I can press another number, e.g. '5' to make it into a half note.

The 'edit cursor' is set to move to the end of the note after it's been created, so it will move to the 'end' of the quarter note, and therefor be ready to make the next note. If you never change your mind about what note length you want, it will work perfectly, but it you change your mind, the edit-cursor will be in the wrong place... The quickest solution seems to be using the , key to move the cursor to the end of the selection.

I think the biggest problem is that Reaper midi isn't thinking horizontally/linearly. Maybe there's a workaround to this, but I can't think of it at the moment.

In my parallel effort to mimic Sibelius, I'm using "set length for next inserted note" instead of "edit: set note length to ...". That might help with the behavior you're after. My free time has been limited lately, but I'm anxious to try some scripting solutions to some of the currently-unavailable actions we want, like typing in rests. Hopefully I can get started on it tonight.

I'd share what I've got so far, Mr. PC, but I'm not nearly as far along as you! Bravo, sir.

I've actually put both those commands together in my list, try it out!

So when you press '5', for example, it will set any selected note, as well as any following inserted notes, to a half-note.

Feel free to start with mine and expand on it! I'm not possessive, and it would mean you have more time to do something with the rests, which I'm utterly incapable of

Awesome! I'll give it a shot tonight. Last night I started working on some scripting, and I'll holler once I have something worth sharing. First, though, I'll get really acquainted with your set so I don't work too redundantly. This is exciting!

If anyone has tried this, let me know how it's working for you. It's working really well for me, and I feel like I've hit a cap for what's possible using the action list, but I'd like to know if this actually works well for other people.

Hi Mr PC
I downloaded the original set — not sure there are updates, isn't it? —.
Pitch selection works, albeit randomly. Can't access note length from numpad.
Must say I'm on Mac.
Please, let me know if there's any update to the keymap.

(I'm using a custom Notion-like set of shortcut/actions to change the grid pace for note length: ctr-w for whole, ctr-h for half, ctr-q for quarter notes and so on)

Hi,

I kept updating it until I felt I couldn't make any more improvements; last update was 05-25-2016 at 06:03 AM, so if you downloaded after that, it's the 'latest version'.

Do you have num-lock turned on?

Pitch selection should select the note closest to the last-selected note. So if an A4 is currently selected, and you press 'B', it should insert a B4 (at the length currently set according to whatever you last pressed on the num-pad, if that's working. You can see the current length at the bottom of the screen).

Hi guys,

A quick update,

ctrl-shift-A select all notes in measure
ctrl-right - move cursor right 1 measure
ctrl-left - move cursor left 1 measure
Grid atomatically changes with note length.

Another update,

https://stash.reaper.fm/v/28572/Sibel...4.ReaperKeyMap

Ctrl-shift-T = Insert New Bar at cursor (selects all notes and move them to the right 1 grid-point. Grid should be set to 1).

Cursor will move to end of note any time it is inserted OR edited.

Edit cursor now follows note-selectin. So if you are pressing 'right' to select the next note, and it leaves the screen, the screen will automatically follow. It also makes input for chords easier.

Another new update,

https://stash.reaper.fm/v/28627/Sibel...5.ReaperKeyMap

The biggest difference is that you can now add triplets the same way you add normal notes (using the num-pad 1-6 to determine note value), but if you hold ALT, you'll get a triplet. All the other automatic goodies apply, so it will unselect all, move the note cursor, and will change the selected note value as well as the following note's value. This makes notation input VERY fast. e.g.

alt num-4 insert triplet quarter OR change selected note to a triplet quarter.
alt 3 = 8th
etc.

Other insertions

ctrl-alt left/right = move cursor by grid
ctrl left/right = move cursor by measure
ctrl-shift left/right = move cursor by pixel
Do the same with Num 4-6 = move notes the same way[/b]

S = toggle snap to grid (changed split to alt-S)
V = view tracks

Also, an update to the legato button. Pressing L now connects notes, but will also lengthen them 1 pixel, and draw the slur above them. (Many instruments need some overlap to trigger legato). What's extra great is that pressing L again will continue to lengthen the selected notes, but won't draw slurs over other slurs.

Also

Backspace deletes selected note, moves cursor back to where is had been before inputing, and selects previous note. This makes it VERY easy to 'undo'.

Also, edited some buggy things.

Dare I say, Reaper should integrate my list into their default? Haha.

Someone please try it, I think it's amazing.

I'm not qualified to tell, surely it's quite an useful list.
Also useful if you could keep the OP updated with new features/shortcuts as you add it.
Thank you for your work and commitment.

I have been updating the OP (is there something missing? I'm not seeing it).

I'm also hoping my instructions are clear enough. I'm finding the hot-keys extremely easy and intuitive, but maybe the concept isn't clear.

I'll check as soon as my right arm disease allows me!

(I'm on Mac, so I must "translate" key combinations and be careful before saying "It doesn't work".)

Again, thank you for all your work and commitment

So your Mac doesn't have num-keys? I'm wondering how Mac users used Sibelius (If they used hot-keys).

So I'm on a Mac right now, with no num pad.

I added regular numbers to the typically numbed keys. It's not quite as nice as having a numbed, but give it a try. This mac has a turkish keyboard, so other things are still a bit difficult to test, but it still beats using a mouse to me.

https://stash.reaper.fm/v/28717/Sibel...C.ReaperKeyMap

All of my custom actions start with a !, so if you press ? to get into the action list, you'll see my custom actions at the top, and can set whichever key you prefer.

Default Tell em to buy a separate num pad ;-)

........... Well they're small, cheap enough to dedicate one to notation and you can make sticky labels for the functions - Good for Windows too. (or really splash out and buy a posh set off ebay, but homemade better for legibility).

Ps great work, thank you!

This is great, but one big difference between my set and the actual Sibelius is that I don't have regular numbers 1-9 assigned to intervals (yet). I was thinking of having them double the usage of numlock numbers for the sake of Mac users. I'm still not sure how Mac users actually use Sibelius. I guess you're right, and it's best to just buy a numpad for this.

Anyhow, these would be great either way. I've personally memorized every key command (been using Sibelius since I was a child and it was version 1 or 2).

Cool, but this looks like it's meant for a different workflow (people who record things in with a midi keyboard) wheras mine is meant for pure 'notaters' who are using qwerty, or for notation editing after it's been played in.

I guess both could work together? That script for when you're doing step-input and the action-list for notation tweaking?

Default New Update!!

Ctrl W = "portato" (adds portato articulation and switches notes to channel 3).

Num7 = notate as natural
Num8 = notate as sharp
Num9 = notate as flat

Ctrl . = Make note dotted.

Z = stem direction down
X = stem direction up
ctrl-shift-up = move note to upper staff
ctrl-shift-down = move note to lower staff

1, (When you set a note sharp or flat, this will also become the new default accidental).
2, Making notes legato "L" will remove any other articulation and set notes back to channel 1.
3, Note selection follows edit cursor when jumping bars (ctrl right/left).
4, Cursor will also follow now while adding to note selection (shift right/left).

I'm wondering if I should reorganize the instructions, instead of 'Sibelius functionality' and 'non-Sibelius' order it by use. Reaper notation has now surpassed Sibelius in my opinion.

Just a quick one.

Really interested in trying this as I prefer to write in notation than play straight from my midi keyboard (I can't play though love composing).

How do you find the notation editor in reaper compared to Sibelius? Last time I tried to get to grip with Reapers I just found it awfully clunky and hard to use. I've always found Sibelius slow, but great and simple to get the articulations, ties and note lengths you want.

In nay case i'll probably be trying this out, thanks!

This is great!
Would it make sense to have this in ReaPack somehow?

I was a hard core Sibelius fan who couldn't handle any other workflow. Tried Finally, MuseScore etc. and nothing worked.

This is not 100% like Sibelius, but it's better in more ways than it's worse, and constantly improving. Give it a chance and I think you'll start to prefer this. My productivity is gonna skyrocket.

By using your keymap, will importing it erase ANYTHING I've set for my own keymaps in Reaper? Or will it simply merge? I don't follow.

This is a good question...I imported the keymap and it deleted/changed existing commands in the MIDI editor (and not just for notation). It's possible I did something wrong...it's possible this is how it's supposed to work.

What I would like is a notation map that's ONLY for the notation view, leaving piano-roll editing 'as-is'...this may (or may not) be possible.

Perhaps Mr. PC could answer us both...many thanks!

It seems SWS extensions have their own section in the keymap editor, but I don't know how they did it. I don't know any coding, just how to make keymaps

Maybe we can ask for this functionality in the requests forum? Separate notation editor keycap section.
