Default Media Explorer and .reapeaks

Seeing how much better the Media Explorer is getting in r4, I am still hesitating to use it because of the .reapeaks files it creates.

It has been discussed in the past and I'd like to bring it forward once more.

Media Explorer creates .reapeaks (cache) files on the files that are previewed, in the same directories as these files.

I am not very fond of that so the following options (or similar) would be useful to me:

1) Create the peak files in a specific centralized location.
2) Don't create peak files at all.

Please note I am not talking about project peak files, only about the media explorer!

Thanks

I see what you mean and how it could get in the way (it's annoying to end up with .reapeaks all over the place because of that) but storing all your .reapeaks in a temp folder under Windows System folder would help you with that and it already exists in Preferences/General/Paths. Having another path just for the Media Explorer seems redundant to me but hey, it wouldn't hurt either, I think.

You can have them in separate folder (preferences). Or do you wanna have an indepentent one for the Media Explorer? I think there's a Feature Request in the tracker for this ...

I didn't know that. It seems like the peaks should be stored in their own directory.

Yes. I want the Media Explorer peakfiles to have a different setting for its reapeak files. But this sounds like an FR (and it is), but let me try a more diplomatic way of saying this...

I don't want the Media Explorer to create additional files in my hard drives, in the folders that I browse with it!

See? Sounds more like a glitch now

The context the Media Explorer operates on, is very different from that of a reaper project's media.

I think this is a simple issue that deserves some attention again in this development cycle.

I wouldn't mind seeing two things happen.

1_Audio that are previewed outside of your project folder have their peak file stored in the temp folder you can set up in prefs

2_Audio that is copied into your project gets its peak file stored in a peak folder within the project folder.

This way NO peak files get laid about all over the place

*3 All temporary ME peak files get cleared when quitting Reaper (optionally).

I think that's great for previewed files that have not been dragged into your project but would love a secondary folder for peaks that have been dragged into the project.

That can be tricky in the cases where:

- reaper crashes
- you previewed files from a removable storage like a USB flash stick or a USB HD (and disconnected the device before quitting reaper)

In both cases you're left with the reapeaks.

Hm, good points, yes. Seems like separate folder for ME peaks is better, then.

Why not in the same temp folder as all other files? I don't care where they come from as long as i can put them to a temp folder. Working fine.

It's not the same as deleting peaks when closing REAPER but a path like this, in Win7, does the trick when I reboot. This is how I get rid of peaks... automatically

I have Reaper set to store all .reapeaks files on a RAM drive. This way they disappear when I shut down. Regenerating them for projects takes a second or two, and Reaper nicely handles this in the background. Works great (for me).

Justin, schwa. Could we have an option for peak files to be stored in ram till reaper shuts down, at which point they are deleted?

On a related note, I find it awkward that turning on storing peaks in an alternate path and choosing that path are done in completely separate windows. Once I set the path assuming that would send all the peaks there and didn't realize until I kept finding peaks files everywhere.

I totally agree: the two settings should be together on the same page.
