I looked up "stem rendering" (the only thing that is listed under "stem" in the manual) and understand what it does. On this and other forums, I occasionally see people referring to just "stems".

Can anyone explain to this newbie what they mean about “stems”?

A stem is a submix of one or more tracks, rendered to a single new track - here are a couple of uses for it (there are probably many more):

1. Creating Submixes to make your overall mix simpler
2. "Freezing" of VSTs and VSTis so that you get the correct sound but don't incurr the processing overhead each time you play it

Thanks Andrew, now I understand.
