Most soundfonts out there suck like Paris Hilton but I want to share two virtual bass setups (based on two soundfonts) that I think anyone should have available as a REAPER Bass track template :)
1. Andy Wanders' Kurzbass.sf2 & Greg Schlaepfer's Soundfont Enhancer
Download Andy's soundfont here: http://andywanders.googlepages.com/KurzBass.SF2
Download Greg's Enhancer VSTi here: http://www.gregjazz.com/download/SoundfontEnhancer.rar
Load the Enhancer as a VSTi, and load Andy's bass in the Enhancer. The result is a most interesting and versatile Bass VSTi, and it's totally free. Do tweak all the settings and effects to get an idea of the richness of this virtual instrument.

2. Ibanez Picked Bass soundfont & Rock Solid Bass impulse & ReaComp or any compressor (and other FX...) of your choice
EDIT/ now I strongly recommend Griz Lee's supersolid2 ReaXcomp preset :)
Download the Ibanez here:
http://www.hammersound.com/cgi-bin/soundlink.pl?action=view_download_page;ID=368;Soun dFont_Location_Selected=Download%20UK;SoundFont_Fi lename_Selected=Janzen_Ibanez.sfpack
(you'll need sfpack to get to the sf2)
Download the Rock Solid impulses here later in this thread (attachment)
Load the Ibanez in SFZ (free), the impulse (no noticeable latency) in ReaVerb, and decide for the final sound by picking and tweaking the compressor of your choice. Try ReaComp's bass preset and the Broadcast Processor's (by Jeroen Breebaart) 'Punchy Bass' preset for hearing various possibilities. Of course the sound can be treated in all kinds of manners, using various FX.
As soon as you like what you hear, save the track setup as a Bass track template :)
Compared to a lot of bass sounds I hear in mixes posted here and there, I think both of these are really worth a try, so enjoy them if you're not a bass player yourself.
