View Full Version : When creating a new track, automatically put cursor in texbox?

Wouldn't it make sense to automatically put the cursor in the track name textbox when you create a new track?

I'd imagine most users work this way -- you create a track, then you name it. Eliminating the extra click to name a track would be one of those little Reaper workflow bonuses, I think...

Just curious -- what's the next step you usually take after you create a new track?

record something to it or put some items on it. but i don't rename it immediately most of the time.

yeah i hardly ever rename it right away. But if the focus went to the textbox, it wouldnt harm anyhting i dont think.

it would! i couldn't start/stop playback then for example with the spacebar.

Hmmm... Good point. I didn't think of that.

So far, I've used Reaper only for mixing, so when I create a new track I know exactly what's going to be on it. Even if I were using it for tracking, I'd usually be naming my tracks as soon as they're created. By working this way, you're also helping name the WAV files as they're recorded -- which can be a big help if you're sifting through files and want an idea of what a particular file contains. (Of course, that's not always the case once things get shifted around in a session, but it's usually a semi-reliable indicator.)

Perhaps automatically putting the cursor in the textbox when creating a new track could be an option in the preferences?

excellent point.

could be an option, but depends on how many would use it probably.

This thread reminds me that I never name anything, I just look at it and immediately know what it is

What if it was automatically given a new name like Pro Tools, like "Track 12"?

Hey sc.. I have to say I prefer how track names are set right now.. I like starting with an unnamed track. In fact I think any focussing to textboxes (eg in VST presets) is already making things more complex in REAPER - spacebar should always play/stop IMO.

Maybe the resolution would be to request an action to "insert new track - focus to name textbox" so you could reassign your normal shortcut to take you directly there as opposed to the default way!

Same here lol! But after 100~ tracks it can get a bit confusing...
