View Full Version : Why can't REAPER use ctrl right-click drag to add a marquee to a selection?
I have never found it comfortable to remember to use shift instead of the more logical/typical ctrl when right-button-dragging to add a marquee to an existing selection of items.
Before the pencil addition using right button with ctrl would move the loop selection, now when you do this it shows the pencil icon but the loop selection still moves - which seems to suggest it's all a little confused!
Since left drag & ctrl left drag take care of the loop selection & pencil functions, couldn't ctrl right drag be made to add a marquee to existing selection?
This would help consistency and, hopefully, not risk breaking anything!
Many thanks

in the name of making a tool-less mouse pointer, we have to remember 25 different keyboard gestures.
lets swallow the pride (yes i am talking strictly to the elite cadre of forum members) and come back down to earth.
yes, i'm saying the mouse pointer needs tool modes.
in response to: 'configure it the way you want'
one person using reaper on a buddy's computer will find it impossible to collaborate due to the MYRIAD (expletive)-ING OPTIONS and CUSTOMIZATIONS. it's waste, waste, waste (-of 'time', for the elite forum members)
---
There are a few reaper people who are so bent on the idea of having more preference options every single day. these people have lost most of their prospective and fall in the 'early adopter' category in terms of their opinions toward the product.
They come up with the most obscure and skewed excuses to back up every feature that reaper has, claiming that it's vitally important. this leans more toward pride and 'originality' for 'originality's sake.'
news for the 'originality' people; reaper looks and behaves strikingly similar to acid.
matter of fact, i believe it had to have been inspired by acid. unless it was the other way around, because the two programs are just too darn similar.
QUESTION TO THE STATUS QUO:
wanna be original? start by being original, not by cloning another program then riffing...
HOW I FEEL PERSONALLY:
i dont care about originality in a DAW, therefore lets not get lost in some termite hole in the mole hole that branches out of some rabbit hole.
i just want to make music, and right now reaper doesnt work. it CAN work, and many claim it does, but my experience and the experience of friends says that it does not work. there are lots of features, yes, but it crashes too much and the options are not streamlined to workflow and the looping section does not work at all.
originality has got to come from a better place than switching the gas with the brakes or the windshield wiper with the gearshift.
MY time and energy,

try this:
make a selection of an item or some using right click marquee.
then, start a right click drag over another item. Before releasing the mouse button, press [ctrl] and release the mouse butting the the [ctrl] button.
that should give you the [ctrl]+r-Click drag add to marquee... you only have to remember to hit the [ctrl] after starting the marquee drag.
note that this actually toggles the new item's selection status and this method can be used for inverting selections too.
Cheers T - nicely on topic :)
gonna try to get used to that - a bit like ctrl-space in FX windows hehe

you may want to enable the pref that adds Loop Selection Changes to the undo list ;) or a handy lock keybind... while I love and use this method, and while my accuracy/timing is pretty good, I have been known to move the loop selection.
Yeah - but this is why I wonder how come the ctrl-right-drag is set to move loop selection at all.. when you have the left-drag (now with or without ctrl depending on your pencil prefs!) to do that.
Would be handy to have ctrl right-drag freed up to allow adding a marquee to a selection I'd say.

One more vote for tools.
I hated them in all the other applications. But in Logic they were finally done right:
1) the toolbox always appearing near the cursor,
2) tools remembered within windows and screensets)
3) modifiers working predictably in each tool
...so I dare say I could work faster with these tools, than now with the Reaper tool-less interface. DAWs are too complicated to make them tool-less.
PS. Also one vote for the marquee zoom from Logic ;)
Sebas.. one day you'll have to start a thread telling us what you don't like about Logic!

YES, please please please add right-click tool selection.
especially when trying to mute many nonlinear pieces of a region, itd just be so much easier to click on each one to mute it with a mute tool than having to highlight it and then use the key that ive assigned to mute -- one click versus click-tap
darn i wish this hadn't turned into a tools FR thread!
The original point was that using shift instead of ctrl to add to selection using right-click drag marquee feels inconsistent.
Just thought i'd leave that as a reminder ;)

Shawnguess - fwiw its not quicker I don't think:
if you have say 5 items - under the current scheme you command click 5 times then tap your shortcut.
under your scheme you control-click, select tool, and click 5 times....
My focus is on getting away from the mouse (RSI) so ...
