I couldn't really sum this one up in the title because I've never experienced this with any software I've ever used.

O.k. I've got 3 tracks recorded whole and split into parts that I want to re-position in time. They're 3 recordings of the same narrated vocal (yeah, I should have used takes instead of tracks, but I didn't know about that feature at the time). Essentially this is a vocal comp, but I need more free time, so to speak!

When I go to move one of those segmented parts forward in time, everything lined up with and following that segment moves accordingly. And when I mean everything, I'm not talking about that one track's audio, I mean ALL tracks move with it. It's like all those tracks are locked in time to the same start position (so they all remain lined up as I shift stuff forward), which is actually very cool for some situations now that I think about it, but what if I want to freely reposition my segments in time independent of the other tracks? Does this make sense? I drag my split audio segment forward and all other tracks move along with it. It's like they're all locked in time together. I want more free time! ;) Is there a setting I have to turn off? What do they call this?

this is really strange to me. I have locking turned off, if that is pertinent information.

thanks.

Ripple editing is what you want. Tool bar buttons, bottom row, third button from left. One click toggles ON for selected tracks/items, another click toggles ON for ALL items/tracks and a third click turns Ripple editing back off.

Try it!

I just found that, moments after posting that message. I'm so excited now. That is such a cool feature and knowing that I can turn it on and off is even cooler! I KNOW that will come in handy at some point. It's interesting to me that it defaulted to being active rather than inactive. no big deal really. just curious.

Thanks for the reply though. Glad to know there's such a good community of folks on this message board helping each other out. I've got miles to go before I tackle the reaper, but there's no turning back now. I'm hooked!

peace.
