View Full Version : Durangle Durangle - Fame (Bowie Cover)

I recently started a new act with my friend Blajlogic. He's bought a load of new equipment and I'm always up for giving things a go. Particularly if they force me to experiment, do things differently than I usually do, push myself.

So I asked him if there are any songs he's always wanted to attempt a cover of.

Here's our first rough take demo of Bowie's Fame. Most tracks will get exchanged with improved versions as we figure what our version 'is' :) the vocals are just guide vocals, not final takes.

Its only 1 minute 20 at the moment and not all the lyrics have been recorded yet but I wondered if anyone here had any thoughts or suggestions, or if anyone thinks we are walking down a dead end! :)

This is my first attempt at singing, and my first attempt at singing this song. Blajlogic did the initial musical loop, I've done a few edits. Bob Hotskins started adding some drum programming. No doubt this will progress a lot in the coming weeks. It loops pretty well :D

Love this!!
Mixwise, vocals are a bit thinnish. Maybe a bit much hi-passing.

I've been wondering exactly that this evening and even messaged my musical cohort that I was thinking as much. He's sadly not been very forthcoming with much critique so far, so thanks for confirming that ;) And yeah, you were spot on with whats caused it.

My only aim is to not be as lame as the Duran Duran version ;)

(im also not overly keen on the delayed shaker in our version, my brain cant focus on much else atm, and the shaker is fucked up in mono)

EDIT: Sort of 'fixed' that particular problem for the vocals for now until theres a final take, it sounds so much better to me now. I've duplicated the 1 minute 20 I had and started work on the next set of lyrics but not got very far yet. And I've gone a bit overboard in places with the editing of the loop Blajlogic made, under cooked the editing in other places... :)

Still, the vocals sound a lot better

hey, thanks people. very appreciated. i sing around the house, along with music but this is my first real attempt at recording a full song. I've always thought I could sing but not really been sure. Last year I had a small handfull of singing lessons and thats given me the confidence to do this.

All the music I usually do is instrumental and I've got rather a lot of albums to finish so its nice to essentially just take on the role of singer in a project with someone else. I'm trying to avoid my usual way of doing things as much as I can for this project.

Still, I added a small bass loop to the track last night, just to see how the track would sound. Its just a loop atm, and not following what the song needs at all, but i think it gives the track a fuller sound. I also asked Blajlogic to pan the guitars hes done left and right, and mono the shaker (i still cant stand the shaker :)). Theres a bit more width to the song now...

Well, skip the instrumental stuff and continue with vocal based music.
