Did my first recording session with Reaper .895 today.
9 ch of 24 bit/44.1
1 stereo channel + 1 mono channel of playbacks while recording.
Macbook 2Ghz 1.25 Gb RAM, to internal HD.
Audiofire 12 with latest software and firmware.
Couldn't use Buffer at 64.
Tried at 128 it crackled every once in a while.
Had to do it at 256.
Not good enought to me.
I did sessions at 128 samples with Digital Performer 5.12 without any problems.
Even at 64 samples.

I sure do...
Iīm just reporting how it worked with my setup.
Thatīs what forums are all about.

I shurly understand that someone can be critical to reaper on osx till now ...itīs in pre-beta.

but iīve to say that iīve no problems with latency, I use a motu 828 mkII and I was really happy about my recording-session with reaper on osx.

no sampling-buffer-crackle or latency.

That's only partly true. At the end you express disappointment and start comparing it to a different DAW.

But I think Justin is happy with your report anyway because testing is no use without decent test results.

I compared Reaper to DP 'cause to me, DP is one of the heaviest DAWs I've used.
I understand it's far from an official release.

the same system did that in DP ?

If its apples to apples, this is a good report, even if its bad :)

Is this after the latest Airport update? Apparently it did some stuff to ruin low latency audio performance...

Yes, the exact same system, same operator, same everything.
I did the Reaper session on monday and a DP session last thursday.
Airport firmware is 1.1.9.3
Airport Adim. Utility and Setup Assist. is 4.2.3
Does this help? I'm running 10.4.10 by the way.
Airport was off during the session.
I'll triple check both apps with brand new sessions one after the other (with a re-start btw'em) and post back.

Just a general note:
to remove the latest airport update you can download
pacifist 2.5.2 and revert.
Google: latest airport update. There are instructions on
the ableton and big blue lounge forums.

Apparently even when turned off the newest airport can rob
some resources :(

Is my version the latest?

At the end you express disappointment and start comparing it to a different DAW.

IMHO comparing basic performance to different DAWs is a valid report, even if we're still in alpha. It's indicative of how efficient the application is.

Before you begin to walk you must crawl. Doing something REALLY basic with performance that at least matches the stuff they give away for free when you buy a cheap audio interface is, in my mind, the price of admission.

Having said that, of course you can't take things too far. It's still early days, and we should be glad that we're able to play with such a fantastic toy this early in the development cycle. I certainly am.

I second that!

I can't find the buffer settings in prefs. How to increase it?

I use a Metric Halo MIO ULN-2. MH's control panel does not give you access to the buffer - they expect your host to do it via CoreAudio (as say Tracktion does for instance)...

You can set the CoreAudio buffer size in preferences/Audio/Device.

Tried it and not that well (I know pre-beta). Hitting a key and few seconds later (up to 3s) I heard my sample (using the ReSamplOmatic).

Any work arounds?

dakke - go to preferences/Audio/Device and choose a number of samples in the "ask for block size" field. At 512 you should not notice much delay (~12ms).

And that was it indeed. Than forget what I said about performance. It works just fine now.

Apparently the checkbox wasn't checked.

Thanks a lot!

Great it's all worked out. Hey, perhaps you can add this to the subject of your post. Like do an edit of it as I bet a lotta people would like to know about this...

So... this post is called..

Not that great performance
What you can do is..

- go to your first post message and click EDIT in the bottom right..
- then click Go advanced
- then you can actually rename the title... cool!

so it would then be like:

[SOLVED] Not that great performance

Time for some sleep now for me..

best wishes
