View Full Version : How Would You Do This In Reaper?

You have an audio reference stereo file of a song.

You want to create a click that matches the song.

The tempo in the song is all over the place.

In Logic, I create a midi track and tap along with it until I'm happy.

I highlight that entire midi region when finished.

I choose "BEATMAP FROM REGION, 1/4 Notes"

I'm done.

Anyway to do this simply in Reaper?

Thanks
Tom

There are a ton of methods, but here is one way http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=14737

Wow, that's a lot of work compared to Logic. I hope this is maybe something that can be considered a feature request.

Many times what I am tempo mapping is not rock music, it's very flowing orchestral stuff with no clear beats (audio wise) and you must just "feel" the music and tap along.

I also saw that it was crashing on some people...is there a consensus now with the most recent version on the best way to do this?

Thanks....this is something I have to do daily in my work so it's very important to me.

Hmm, have you tried Bevosss's way? (Described in the linked post above.)

It may seem like a lot of work when reading it, but really, all you have to do is:

1. Play through the song dropping markers on the start of every bar
2. Hold down a button for a few seconds.

(Well, you have to create the macro as well, but that you only have to do the very first time you try it. When you'll map your next song you don't have to re-create the macro - it's already there.)

I also do this from time to time and I fins Bevoss's method very quick and easy (but then again, I've never tried the Logic way :) )

A couple of ideas: you could record the midi file just as you do in Logic - then just listen along and drop a marker at each bar start using a hotkey. then run Bevoss' macro (which can be improved with the new looping meta-action :) )

Not too much more work...

Well dropping the markers is fine, yes, but going through a 4 minute song bar by bar and adjusting the markers to be exactly on the beat could be brain damaging and time consuming....I'll try it and see....

Still.....Choosing a menu command like "Beats from Region" in Logic is insanely fast and cool...wonder if this possible to implement?

Thanks

don't see how its any more trouble to move markers around than to move midinotes but anyhow...

if you're serious about your request, why not post it over in the "FR" forum ?

btw I also like DP's "move beats" facility that lets you manually adjust beats while leaving your midi and audio alone with respect to time....

I find I don't have to make more than 4 or 5 adjustments to the midi notes. But from what I read, each marker in Reaper will always be a little late, so that means moving EVERY marker....

Reapers action 'Markers: Time signature measure from time selaction' that Bevosss uses in his makro is not that far away from Logics 'Adjust Tempo using Object Length and Locators'.
The major difference being that Reaper deals with full single measures only. It's a limitation, but for timingwise not that complex songs it works quite good.
