I've been using Reaper on PC's for a while, but I am new to using it on a Mac (new to Macs in general) and new to this forum. This might be a dumb question, but should there be any problem opening Reaper projects on a Mac if the project was recorded on a PC (with Reaper)?

I tried this a few times and I get a message like "The project was made on an instance of Reaper that requires a plug-in(s). This version does not have the plug-in(s)". (I'm paraphrasing, but that's basically what the error message states). The audio files then go "offline" and the project can't play.

The projects I am trying to open contain no audio plug-ins (VST, etc.) whatsoever, so what "plug-in" is this referring to? Is this some incompatibility since the project was recorded on a PC?

System - Mac Mini G4 1.25 / 1 GB / OS X 10.5

Thanks in advance!!

Did you have any 3rd party extension plug-ins installed on the Windows side? This could cause this (i.e. Xenakios's or others).. At any rate I wouldnt worry about it too much, if the project plays back the way you want you should be set...

Justin - not that I know of, but I must have something on that PC, right? I can't think of what this/these would be. Can someone give some other examples of these types of things?

Would a driver for an audio device count as a third-party extension? OR - would designating a program like SOUNDFORGE as the default editing tool count as an extension? I just don't know.

This error occurred with every project I tried to open, all of which were done on the same PC and most of which were just simple projects (2 to 5 recorded tracks) with no audio plugins , no Midi tracks, etc. It asks you if you want to "ignore the plugin", but even if you click YES, this occurs.

Also, I don't think I was clear before, but these projects DON'T play at all. Each track (audio file) goes "offline" and the project just sits there and will not play or do anything. So whatever this is, it obviously effects the project in a global way, and NOT just a few of the tracks or whatever.

can you get anything else to play on the mac?

like if you were to open reaper, create a new project, record some audio, save the project and close reaper - can you open it and play it back ok?

Dazza - No, I can't, actually. I have another thread about this problem, in fact. I thought they were 2 separate issues, but I could be wrong. I will paraphrase here:

I open a new project, record an audio track - when I'm done recording, the waveform disappears and I get an error that says: "Can't Open Audio File" and the program freezes.

It's like Reaper loses the file that I just recorded. The (.wav) file is being recorded and saved correctly, because it's in the directory when I look for it. If I open said file with iTunes or something, it plays. But Reaper can't open it.

Also, I can't import any audio files into Reaper - I get a similar error (can't open audio file) when I try.

ahh - I would guess that there's nothing wrong with the PC projects.

Perhaps somebody cleverer than me could help on this - could it be a 'default file type' kind of problem - perhaps Reaper is looking for AIFF's by default?

Dazza - Good suggestion, but I actually changed the defaults a couple times from .AIFF to .WAV and back again and so forth. Same issue.

It HAS crossed my mind that the issue of the project NOT opening audio files and the "missing plugin" error could be mutually exclusive. For instance, maybe if I could fix the file-open issue, REAPER would let me click through the missing plugin dialog and play the project like normal, but I just can't get that far to figure that out.

So what you said, actually supports that, and you're probably right.

There is also a strong possibility that I installed the program incorrectly, which I will verify when I get back to my MAC this evening. This could all be related to that, in which case it's 100% user error, which will be a non-issue when they release the OS-X build with an installer.

Problem solved. I had dragged the Reaper app file out of the Applications\Reaper folder, therefor it was not in the correct directory with everything else it needed to be in there with.

Now I can open projects that came from my PC with no problem, no error message, no mention of a missing plugin or any of that jive.

This also solved the other problem I was having, which was the subject of the other thread I posted...

Thanks yall. Pretty stoked up in here. Reaper seems to be working great on my little mac, I'm impressed.
