is this to be on the safe side, or to cater for poor file allocation tables? any reason NOT to turn this off?

I think the splitting is useful if planning on:
1) storing the files on a CD or a DVD
2) using a FAT16 filesystem (for backup or transfer), where 4GB is the maximum allowed filesize.
3) transfering the files on a USB memory stick or equivalent.
I guess it is also a safety measure, to save individual files during recording instead of trying to save all files at once (like in PT) risking a crash (like in PT) and losing all the files (like in PT).
I haven't had a single crash at the end of recording (like in PT), so I'm not sure if the safety measure is a real reason. Like it would be in PT.

Ha ha, excellent answer... well Reaper has never disappointed me, so I shall change that option, otherwise every session so far gets split...

Just don't come looking for me with a baseball bat if something goes wrong! Those were merely what I think right now with the current knowledge I have.
Just a funny story about the split option. A while ago I was already typing a bug report since only some of my tracks got splitted. Right before clicking the send-button I realized that it was only the stereo tracks that were split. Naturally. Doh!

All good dude. I have increased it to 4GB. Won't hunt you down if I wreck it. :)
