old post:

Here it is:

http://reaper.fm/files/osx_early/reaperosx0.11U.dmg

Universal Binary, ABSOLUTELY REQUIRES OS X 10.4.x (.9 is all I've tested with). Supporting 10.3.x in the future may be an option, but it isn't yet. For PPC machines, it needs a G4 or a G5.

This is super-alpha-preview-etc, so don't go saying "this button doesnt work" or "I can't set fade shapes" or "the takes dont appear in the takes submenu" or "X doesn't work".

Tons of stuff isn't in yet, but you can at least load projects and edit and save, etc..

you can load VST and JS fx, but can't access their UIs yet. You can automate them though.

so what feedback _DO_ I want then? I guess if it blows up in some repeatable fashion, I'd like to hear about that...

hmm does 10.3.9 support UB?

oops, just looked through some stuff.. 10.3.x support anytime soon (i.e. in the next few days) is out of the question... doh

UB apps can run on a least 10.2.x - and probably lower, though supporting anything less than 10.2 usually isn't worth the effort. You just have to compile the PPC part with GCC3 and build it against the 10.2 SDK - both are optional during the Xcode install.

Apple introduced some nice APIs in 10.4 so I wouldn't blame you for supporting anything less however...

Hi Justin,

I was so excited to run Reaper on my Mini G4... but after 15 seconds of colored spin ball nothing more happends.
I have tried several times with the same result.

I have 10.4.8 and the audio card is a USB Terractec Aureon 5.1, but it is the same without the card plugged.

Jim,

Do you have any VST plug-ins installed in /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST/ ?

If so, can you temporarily move them and see if that enables REAPER to start?

Thanks,

Justin

Yesssss !

And it is strange :
- I have removed the VST folder : Reaper starts
- I have restored the VST folder with all the same plugins inside : Reaper starts also now...

First tests with audio : there is sound, the automation plugins works... it is already great !

Two observations...

Shouldn't the dylibs be included in the application bundle?

Shouldn't the .ini files live in the preferences directory, even if they're not strictly pref files?

here's an update (I also updated the original post):

http://reaper.fm/files/reaperosx0.11U.dmg

VST configs should sort of work, cleaned up the .dmg (all the plug-ins go in the .app), the .ini goes in the ~/Library/REAPER/ directory, lots of other little stuff...

My WaveArts VST plugs show up in the list as they should, but when I add one to a track (TrackPlug in particular), the UI shows up but doesn't respond to any mouse actions. Exiting the app is the only way to get rid of the window.

No VST effects show up here...

I also was not able to record anything at all....

I was not able to find inputs from my firepod to change channels for each track... I was only able to get inputs 1/2 of I/O

I'm a brand new user, who is a recent convert to Mac's. Thank you kindly for your efforts, and for your willingness to include the Mac's in your efforts.

I've dabbled with programming in the past (http://tremor.quakedev.com), and although purely a hack, I would be happy to assist anyway I can.

Out of interest, how do you enable VST plugins to work on an Apple system? I don't know much about them, having only used a few for simple purposes, but was under the impression that they are usually compiled to x86 (DLLs). Sorry if I'm a real n00b for saying this!

Another brand new Mac user, had my MacBook for about a week or two now.

Loaded up both Reaper 0.1 and 0.11 alphas, both work great! Of course, haven't loaded any effects other than the Sonalksis demos, but those weren't detected.

Interface looks nice, it makes good use of the screen real estate. Also with CoreAudio it works great. Was able to playback through my laptop speakers and FireBox with no setup needed.

Thanks again for the effort and I'm looking forward to the added features! I'll give some feedback with future versions and testing.

10.3 support would be a very great idea if it is at all possible.

There's a lot of people out there in studioland on 10.3 who are happy with that release purely because their (last year's)protools hd still runs absolutely fine on it.

I'm not a mac person, but I'd like say 'try this guys' in a few places, and people won't want to upgrade their o/s just to try something new if their main o/s version already works, and serves no other function bar booting up just that one application.

I do think it's great that mac can now experience this, though. How awesome is that?

And Lo.. the Mac version of REAPER was born.

There were many who came to see the miracle - some in disbelief.

They brought gifts of praise, bug-reports, and requests for 10.3 compatibility.

Some even offered programming support.

It was truly Jesusonic.

I just joined the message board so i can say this is GREAT! I just got a new Imac the other week (I use both PC and MAC these days) and I was saying to myself, "You know, it would be cool if I could get REAPER on the Mac."

And now that's practically true.

I was going to be buying Logic Pro in a few weeks but using Reaper is more than enough for the amount of audio work I do (I already use it on my PC in most situations).

Thank you so much for making the Mac version.

My only question (as I don't know a whole lot about programming) is when you create an update for the PC version will the MAC update be available at about the same time?

Once the mac version catches up to the PC version (which may be 6 months or so from now), then it will probably have a more relaxed release schedule (i.e. ~7 days behind the PC version).

Justin,

Will the faders for the Mac version stay on the left- as it is at present? It's just a bit weird having them there. (a bit too Garbageband for my liking hehe). As an old school type, I much prefer my faders from left to right- just like the PC version. Also will the Mac version have the brilliant Dock feature too??

One thing I dislike about Macs are all those floating windows. I'm not a big fan of Windows' 'all in one' feature either- especially with a 15" screen! ;) Intuem has a neat little feature where if one moves the main screen around, any attached ones follow it too, making screen management a lot simpler. Perhaps a revolving cube, with different screens on different sides would be an interesting innovation?? :D Just a suggestion.

Justin

The mac version will get a mixer view (like the PC version has) eventually.. :)

Art Evans
01-05-2007, 05:35 PM
I can imagine that a revolving cube would be pretty sexy but CPU intensive - however, the Maize program mentioned elsewhere has the simple but effective feature of having ten buttons along the top of the interface which reveal ten different windows of stuff (gui's of effects and controls) that you can set up as you wish. Could be a handy way of displaying many FX gui's at once in Reaper, or its windows when other than docked (though I guess the docker tabs kind of work that way anyway... hmmm).

I'm going to be dropping some serious dough on a new daw in the next few months, and am seriously considering a MacPro (currently a PC user).

While Ableton Live is cross-platform, Sonar is not, and these are my main apps. Having Reaper fully ported for OSX would make for a near-seamless transition, as I have no desire to use Logic or Cubase.

So I will be following these developments with fingers crossed... :-)

hello Justin,

today i was mixing with the mac preview build.
after saving the project and then quit, reaper crashes.
i reopen and load the saved project, and crash.

maybe this is related to pluggo, since i am using
colortone from tritone digital in this project.
so after i delete the path to the vst plugins
in the preferences, the project loads up fine.

just wanted to let you know.
i really enjoy reaper so far!
looking forward to the next update!

Changes: not much new since the last preview builds, except brought up to speed with the Windows version (performance improvements, smooth seeking, better zoomed in view, etc etc).

The next version should have more of the dialogs in place (including Render and record format choosing etc etc).

Hi,

I have tried to use some plugins.
I know that Reaper is in alpha stage but perhaps that it could help ?

- all the plugins made with Sonicbirth don't show their interface but they work

- the Wave Arts Masterverb gui shows the controls but not the background and the controls cannot be move.

- the Arturia CS80 flashes.

- the plugins made with Max/Msp (Pluggo, Hypno) and the "Carbon MDA Effects" don't appear at all in the list of plugins (yes, they are in the same folder).

- the Tassman Keys Edition makes Reaper quit.

- plugins that seem to show and run well : Albino, Crystal, Quikquak Rayspace, SFX Machine RT

Tested on a MacMini G4, 10.4.8.

Wow. Great stuff.

I got Albino, Crystal and FreeG to load GUIs, but I can't get the synths to fire, since i don't see any midi editing functions available. Can't wait.

Also, the metronome flams when playing over a looped set of whole bars. That is, I'm getting what sounds like a click at 2.0.1, even if I have the loop selection snapped to whole bars and have only selected bar 1.

small stuff for now to be sure.

Hi,

I'm currently a Pro Tools user (LE 7.1, 1.9ghz G5 w/1gb RAM, 10.4.8), but this is definitely looking interesting. I can't wait to try this out. The only thing holding me back is my RTAS plugins, but I'm sure I'll manage. :)

I'll be giving it a go soon, for sure!

I just wanted to thank you for the Mac support! Once I get it installed, I'd be glad to offer any feedback that you might want (bugs, crash info, or just praise lol). It's great to see a developer in the DAW arena actually making software not only from feedback from the users, but at such a ridiculously affordable price!

Best of luck!

Just booted into 10.4 just to check it out. This looks really promising, I'm exited to see this ported to OS X. Played arround a bit and no obvious errors/crashes.

I've read your post concerning <10.4 compatability problems but nonetheless here's another vote for putting 10.3.9 support high on the todo list. I won't upgrade anytime soon & I'd love to use (and test!) reaper ;)

Changes: not much new since the last preview builds, except brought up to speed with the Windows version (performance improvements, smooth seeking, better zoomed in view, etc etc).

is it correct that the mixer (no mixer window)?
and that there is something odd with the playrate? (how to reset?)

Hi,

I've been running reaper on my macbook pro today and it's smooth sailing. I'd like to second the request for Audio Units support. I think this would be very important for many mac owners/users

for example, anybody using Line6 GearBox plugins gets VST on PC and AU on mac. No VST on mac and, according to L6, it will never happen. And while they are not the best plugins they are pretty happenin' for the price and lots of people are, and will be, using them in the future.

Thanks!

Justin

we are planning on supporting AU.

The next build coming (sometime this month) should have basic MIDI hardware support, and maybe a preliminary version of the MIDI editor, too.

It would be cool to ReaMote between the PC version and the Mac version. My impression is that a lot of people are currently transitioning from windows to a Macintel machine but their older machines are still very capable in some respects and it would be a bonus to slave the old machine to the new mac. Is that or would it even be technically possible?

So far the Reaper OSX preview has been very solid for me. No crashes or issues other than lots of stuff not there yet.

The audio editing is sweet... I'll likely be one of those asking for midi improvements, but cannot say much until the existing midi is added.

I'll be purchasing Reaper as soon as the OSX version has caught up.

love what the PC version can do - & hate editing mulitrack audio in Logic so I think I will be a very happy Reaper user once rewire & mixer are implemented.

Has coding for the Mac been more difficult than for PC? I'm curious, because this may be a peek into how difficult it would be to port Reaper to Linux....or does porting to OSX accomplish the lion's share of that task?

On the main page it says, that a mac osx version will come at q4 of 2007.
Right now instead of pushing it, he´s probably preparing the code for it. That looks like a clever choice IMO.
And it will probably end up more mature and stable that way.

From a Reaper perspectives are there any benefits to running on Macs i.e. what do I get out of it? I understand that die hard Mac users now get to use Reaper but in general are there any real benefits as far as Reaper to running on the Mac as compared to Win XP Pro, as compared to Win64?

I wonder because I have an old G4 sitting here at home collecting dust.

As an aside and somebody that has always had his PCs custom built, it seems to be that it still the case that you can get more machine for the money on the PC side, also easier/cheaper to upgrade and music apps have been running quite well on PCs now for a while.

So Justin, besides the fact the fact that you all get a larger potential market, what benefits do you see for user to run Reaper on a Mac?

The Apple thing isn't about hardware any more. (And in retrospect, IMHO, it never really was at least since the really meagre G4 machines from Apple.) Technically it's been about Apple's operating systems allegedly being far superior than any Microsoft Windows ever. And of course there is the whole Apple image thing, "it's cool to own and use a Mac"...And so on...

Ok, but I don't wanna start any futile platform wars here! :D I actually think it's very good that Reaper now gets developed on OS-X, it'll be a very nice and hopefully not too expensive (in the future) alternative to Pro Tools LE, Garage Band and similar softwares on the Mac...

-X

Justin
04-12-2007, 09:39 PM
It's really about personal preference.. there's no huge advantage of one platform over the other... and once REAPER gets fully up to speed on the mac it should be similar (though I do think MSVC optimizes more than gcc, but anyway).

I doubt there is any advantage for the PC user to switch, but of course, for the mac user, having an OSX port means Reaper is available. A nice advantage.

I edit video, and use Final Cut, so I am Mac based and not likely to change what with thousands of dollars of software, time, and projects invested.

My WinXP Reaper projects opened just fine on OS X. However, the VST plugins are not yet implemented in Reaper OS X, so mixing and editing doesn't go too far. Automation, markers, regions, etc, they transfer perfectly though.

Looking at the dates of the previous Mac versions, I can't stop thinking that we could have a new version in a week or so. Can't wait! Really, can not wait! Need...new...version...NOW!!

I got so used to having two versions a week for PC...

Mac users get antialiased waveforms! Unfair! ;)

Are there any plans for antialiased waveforms on the Windows version?

--- EDIT ---

Okay, I know that the antialiasing on Mac is probably because of Quartz, but since the Windows version already has an OpenGL renderer, it should be possible, no?

Preexisting Midi file import question?
I'm a Mac Garage Band user who downloaded your Reaper Mac Beta today. I obviously don't know much about Reaper or music programs -- but the question I have as a newbie is -- can one import an already existing Midi file as a take off point for later change into Reaper? I've tried to do so & looked into preferences & changed some some things & even tried dragging a .Midi file into the main window but it doesn't import nor is it recognized in any of the pull down menu's. If so, what are the exact steps please? I've looked at the Help PDF but don't see how to do it.

It's possible in the Windows version, so should be possible (at some point at least) in the Mac version.
It might not be ready though, I don't know.

do you mean vst's?

to access them you have to scan or browse the files

go to your hd (named whatever)on the left side of window

then library

then audio then vst.

The OSX version is currently quite a way off being as good as the Windows version. Consequently, I don't think it is usable as a OSX application.. YET.

I'm really hoping for the AU plugins too but also I would LOVE to get more minor features like template saving and all around GUI fixes on VST plugs that don't always show up... I think it would be pretty sweet to have the REAPER VST plugs on here... A good convolution reverb would help out so much!

Justin,

I have REAPER for PC and I really want to use it on the Mac mainly because the best native plug-ins out there right now are Audio Units only (Airwindows stuff). I abjectly beg of you to please incorporate Audio Units into the Mac version of REAPER. With the 64-bit mix engine of REAPER and the Airwindows plug-ins people could get a sound that would beat everything else out there on any platform.

Well that's my selfish request, but I think others may feel the same way. I'm eagerly anticipating REAPER for Mac. I think it's going to beat all the other DAWs for Mac once it's fully functional.

Nothing wrong with a Mac sounds to me like you need to learn how to use it (I had to learn a whole new set of chops when I got mine) do you have the track set up to monitor? you need to enable that in order to hear. should be in the mixer panel on the track near where you clicked to arm the track for recording.

Hi, to whom is may concern. I've found a bug in the midi out capability of REAPER 35U Beta for OS X. I know it's not released software but I figured I'd mention it.

My setup:

M-Audio Axiom 49 sending note messages on channel 1

REAPER reading from midi channel 1 and sending to midi channel 2

AU Labs with Zebra2 loaded reading from midi channel 2

I noticed there's stuck notes when using several of the midi FX plugins such as JS: midi/midi_transpose.

To get stuck notes, I just have to play notes and move the transpose slider at the same time. Eventually 1+ notes will stick on.

I loaded MIDI Monitor and noticed the following:
Time Source Message Chan Data
*** ZERO *** To Zebra2 Note Off 2 C#3 0
*** ZERO *** To Zebra2 Note On 2 C3 37
*** ZERO *** To Zebra2 Note Off 2 D#3 0
*** ZERO *** To Zebra2 Note Off 2 F3 0

I've seen this before when I was playing around with making a simple CoreMIDI Arpeggiator. I had to add in the framework CoreAudio and #include <CoreAudio/HostTime.h>.

Each packet I then added a timestamp with the following:
MIDIPacket packet;
packet.timeStamp = AudioGetCurrentHostTime();

Once I added this, my timestamps looked good and my stuck notes stopped happening.

Sorry for the long-winded post, I hope it's of some use.

I like what I see so far. One Mac-specific request -

It would be sweet if the zooming and scrolling functions supported the multi-directional (i.e. horizontal and vertical at the same time) scrolling/zooming you get with the Mighty Mouse and/or the Macbook touchpad scrolling. Try it out in Garageband - it's really intuitive and useful in every application that supports it.

Agreed - this is exactly what I was thinking when I first installed this new version (thanks, btw). Ableton Live uses this zoom/scroll technique and it is the most intuitive way to move around on any program I've used.

This zooming technique is documented here complete with movies:
http://mike.teczno.com/notes/ableton-live.html

Thanks for your consideration.

to master use the render function it will take your mix and

output a stereo mix .wav file.

the eq does need to be a plugin and there are some available on the mac beta in the jesusonic effects.

In order to use jesusonic plugs in V.35 you have to set

in "audio configuration" the folder for jesusonic as where you

have the jesusonic folder on your Hard drive each time you

restart the program this will get fixed soon i'am sure and

there will

also be VST plug-ins that come with reaper eventually too.

Is there some sort of time schedule for the Mac version to catch up to the Window one?

Will it ever?

Will there be simultaneous release in the near future or will the Mac port always be behind by a few months?

Come to think of it, seeing the last update is a few months old, is the Mac port even actively pursued or is that idea been dropped altogether?

Reason I'm asking is that I might end up with a MacBook pro for my mobility needs and I'd like to port project seamlessly between my home workstation and the lappy if I do. Yes I could run XP on the MBP, but native is always better, especially for drop out free audio.

Running XP in Bootcamp on a Macbook is just as "native" as running XP on a Dell laptop. You'll only see performance/stability losses if you run XP with some sort of third-party virtualization software like Parallels or Fusion.

In any case, Justin has estimated that the versions will be equivalent toward the end of the year. It's been interesting going from the PC to the Mac version - plenty of the newer features are there (track lanes, the zoomed in waveform displays, etc.) but a lot of basics like the vertical mixer view and the navigator are MIA. It's obviously catching up fast, but I wouldn't switch right now if running Reaper is one of your primary uses for a computer.

I'm no Mac specialist, but one thing I learned is that Mac machine have no Bios therefore they need to run some type of Bios emulation software in order for Window to run; now, that can't be good for seamless multitrack audio recording. Hence my preference to run and record in Mac OSX.

So why not buy a Window laptop? Well, here in Canada you'd pay anywhere from 300 to 600 buck extra to buy a Window based laptop with the exact same configuration as a MBP, and I'm a cheap bastard. I figured a MBP with a multichannel Firewire interface and an eSATA external drive (which I already have) would make the ultimate cheap mobile recording solution with the option to boot Window occasionaly. All I'm missing is software, I'd love to use Reaper but the end of the year seem far away, maybe I ought to check what's available now for the OSX plateform.

Thank's for the reply.

That is understandable. But after several sessions with my Presonus Firestudio, I can confirm that 16 simultanious tracks to an external USB (or FW) HD didn't reveal a slightest problem with Bootcamp. Actually, it runs remarkably better than my AMD PC used to. So I think You really shouldn't worry.

maybe I ought to check what's available now for the OSX plateform.

Why not. I guess Mac version of Ardour could be a good one. But don't skip Bootcamped Reaper for wrong reasons.

New Reaper OSX Beta was estimated to be available this week, but I guess it'll still take a while. Anyway, it's on it's way.

Excuse me where is the dock ? I can't find it...

I have mine hidden, because of this 12" screen....

I just roll the mouse over it again and there it is.

Thx for the update Jason.

Is there no rewire function in 039 yet, or am i missing it somewhere? Tried to get my Reason to work with Reaper but no luck. Was just wondering :)

Hey, just checked out the latest build. Its not stable for me, freezes on launch often. the earlier build didn't do this. But anyway, I'm wondering if there is a midi editor and how you open it, and also are there seperate midi tracks? how does that work, or doesn't it yet in the mac build?

No MIDI editor in the Mac edition yet, n8tron.

I think I've come across some bugs with the loop selection - after some playing around, I don't seem to be able to edit, enable or disable the loop selection. I'm running Reaper on a new MBP on 10.4.1. I'll dig in and see if I can find a recipe to quickly replicate this.

I hate to be the overeager requestor, but the ReaFX would be a GODSEND for the Mac platform - it's amazing how few free or inexpensive "bread and butter" effects there are (although Apple's built in .au effects are pretty nice). As it is, I can't give Reaper too much action since I don't have any EQ, Compression or Reverb to use with it.

KVR audio lets you search their website for free VST and AU plugs that have all that, and I am using a bunch of them now myself, Camel Crusher is a great plugin, and right now it is one of the few GUI's that will show up in REAPER and work right.

I also have some amazing freeware reverbs that I found, some of them are donationware but they are only $10 or something, and then Airwindows makes some awesome AU plugs that are either cheap or free! www.kvraudio.com just set up your search options for freeware VST effects that work on Mac OSX last I checked there are about 100 free VST effects and around 50 VSTi effects for Mac listed on there. :D

now up to 0.40 with advanced theme support!

I haven't tested this build on PPC with advanced themes, let me know if they look right!

Hi.. I suspect we'll have a newer build with more functionality in a week or two... :)

Justin, I know you are busy babysitting 2 platforms, but I'm curious when a 'mixer' will happen with the Mac version?

I should be testing the new build out next weekend, recording a live show. Even though this version is still in its in infancy so to speak, it should be more than capable to get the job done.

Thank you for porting this to the Mac.

Well the advanced themes are working fine on PPC but what about the older simple ones? those are gone now!

I like the Radar theme the best so far....

I am thrilled with the progress so far, however, I was trying out Adv. Themes on my iBook G4 (10.4.10) and I noticed that in places on the advanced themes, the transparency colors were visible. (That crazy magenta-pink color) It is mainly showing on the Cornish themes, I think because it is used alot there, but I also noticed it above the fx button on YounSoft as well.

Here are some pics.

hmmm... not to be the bubble buster, but i actually would care a lil more for midi editor and quantize function 1st before cheesy skins. But anyways does reaper mac support au plugins.

Yeah themes are nice.... but I would like to have more features like better plugin GUI support and *gasp* better editing features!

Oh yeah and if I could have my RADAR theme back... I would be happy for a while too...

Any idea when the reaplugs will be ported to Mac?

Does anyone know if I purchase a non-commercial license of REAPER today will it also work with the OS X version when it's released? I have a windows laptop I tinker with but my main machine is a mac. Anyone know the policy on this?

hey - just thought i'd chime in here also : that soundflower from cycling74.com will allow you to chain MacReaper and NINJAM (though a standalone NINJAM will need to be open.)

not sure if the final release will allow NINJAM to run inside MacReaper.

*also one might try JackOSX for an alternative to ReaRoute for MAC.

has anyone tested this yet?

Is anyone else having problems when upgrading between successive versions of Mac Reaper? Every time I upgrade, all of the clips in projects that I've started in previous versions are labelled "Offline" and will not play back - I never experienced this on the PC side. Also, does anyone know how to install the new advanced themes? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for asking that question!! I felt like an idjit. I spent quite a bit of time searching the site for info on installing/using themes - lots of discussion about them but I never found anything about how to actually install them. I figured I must be the only one left out of the loop here. Maybe someone can give us a clue...? (I couldn't even find that info for the pc version to at least get a starting point)

BTW, I was really excited when I checked out macReaper initially, still am actually, but like many others I'm waiting for a few more basic things to show up before I give it a real go. I check this thread daily for new posts... anyone else notice how many hits this thread has compared to the others?

JKL you can install themes to REAPER040/REAPER.app/Contents/MacOS/ColorThemes

For finding this directory cntrl+click or rigth click on REAPER and choose "Show Package Contetnts" and there you are :)

I'm really looking forward to this one. I've been wary of the initial Reaper buzz and praising (a natural fanboy-repelling reflex of mine) but I have to say Reaper look like a bit of a monster at the moment.. a nice, big, powerful (but yet friendly) monster that might just make me ditch Logic :D

and I don't mind waiting for it :D

I am wondering is it possible to get a allmostnolatency to monitor while recording.
Useing Presonus Firepod, Macbook (dualcore,1G ram) and the latest Reaper.

where should I change some numbers, or settings. or is it possible in general to create for example 5 different aux/monitor mixes ,that would not be disturbingly late with this set up.

Is there a list of features which aren't implemented yet?

I can't wait for the OSX version to catch up with Win. I am slowly building up my Mac plugin collection ready for the release of Reaper.

Justin will have the final say about what works and what doesn't. These are my notes - if I've made a mistake, someone please correct me - I know that I'm sure that I've missed something.

No Tooltips, ie Rollovers don't work
No Keyboard Control Preferences
Most Property Editors don't work
Mixer is missing
Show Routing Matrix is missing
External Editors are missing
Midi Editor is missing
Virtual Midi Keyboard is missing
Big Clock is missing
Performance Meter is missing
Reaper Dock is missing
Currently only supports VSTs, AUs will be supported in the future.
Many (maybe all) Jesusonic Effects Units are missing graphical interface (like meters), but sliders/buttons work.

Advanced themes work - I've downloaded almost all of them and tested them - not all are to my taste, but that will vary with everyone.

The manual is mostly PC based - so being used to audio and midi recording using other DAWs is somewhat essential to actually using the program.

However basic audio and midi recording do work.

I've tested Reaper on both a PowerPC G4 and an Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with my Line6 Toneport KB37 combined Audio Interface (USB) and 37 Key MIDI Keyboard with transport controls. I've recorded midi tracks using various VSTi plugins - Remedy, Jupiter8v, etc. I've recorded my guitar and my not so good voice using a Mic plugged into my KB37.

I've also used my M-Audio Trigger Finger-16 as a midi device via USB.

I've rendered tracks to WAVs and AIFFs - the lack of a mixer can be an issue, so recordings can't be made perfect.

I've never had it crash and only a few issues with midi recording.

So all in all, it is well put together late alpha, lacking many finishing touches - but each new release has added more and more features.

Most of the plugins appear to work - I'm still trying these as I get some time to experiment with the application.

Updated on the 2nd of September. Based on Mac Reaper 0.40 Preview.
