Correct way to step knobs?

I've been currently just using knobman and telling it to do only 5 positions, which gives a 5 png strip. I just use this with the iknobcontrolmulti and just set the int bounds from 0,0,4. Is that the standard way of doing it? I see something about default gearing, don't know what thats all about.

I think you're doing it right.

The gearing is about how much you have to move the mouse to move the knob a given amount.
