i had a project i was working on. 5 tracks of midi, vsti (no samplers) and an effect or two on each track, absolutely no audio. when i loaded it up, i looked in taskmanager and saw it took about 550megs. hmm... kind of strange for just 5 tracks. okay, whatever. then i did a lot of editing in the midi editor, recorded a couple more small midi parts, still no audio or samplers. i looked in taskmanager again just to see how things were going, and for some reason, the project was now using about 900megs of ram. no other programs were running. why the ram jump? where'd it come from? though i edited a lot of midi, i barely added anything. did it come from storing undo files or something?

actually, i guess it's 6 tracks. 4 instances of albino 3.0.1, 1 instance of ephonic's drumatic, and 1 instance of lounge lizard 3.0. some sidechaining with vanilla compressor, a couple instances of reaeq, and an instance of arcdev's et200 delay.

i exported some midi and moved the project over to tracktion (i wasn't too far along into it, so it wasn't too bad to move), which is what i normally use, to see how it was there, and memory usage never went above about 500megs. actually, in trackion, even on fairly big projects, i've never had anything go above about 700megs, so i'm kind of baffled why i topped that with only a handful of midi tracks and no audio ones in reaper.
