View Full Version : Render nitpick

I'm just sitting here wondering why Reaper takes so long to render silence? I can see when it's doing some serious FX crunching that it might take longer but shouldn't silence be instantaneous - or at least close to that?
16 bars in the middle of a tune with 2:00 minutes of silence on either end of it - shouldn't Reaper just write silence and get to the audio part right away when rendering?
I don't know. Just thinking out loud while I watch the progress bar....

Are you using plug-ins on tracks? It seems Reaper doesn't, at least yet, automatically turn off processing of plug-ins when there are no audio items on tracks...Processing silence through plug-ins maybe just as expensive, if not more expensive under some cases, as processing actual audio.

Ahh, now that would explain it. There wouldn't be much point to rendering if I wasn't using any plug-ins on the track - unless I wanted to consolidate a bunch of edits I guess... I was just rendering like a regular track freeze and there are some hefty plug-ins on the track. And, I've got 'always run track FX' ticked in the options.
It would be nice if Reaper automatically turned off processing when there was just blank space or silence in the audio file on a track while rendering - just to speed things up a little.
Thanks for that. At least I know why now, and that's good enough for the moment.
Gives a couple minutes for a stretch anyway... ;)
Cheers.
