Something that really annoys me at the moment is that when you float an FX GUI the cursor focus is in the "VST program" field.

This means that if you float the FX, then press spacebar - the project won't start playing, you will clear whatever text is in the "VST program" field.

My typical work flow would be
Open FX Chain window for a track
Double click on an effect to float the gui so I can keep it open whilst I play the song back and tweak the FX
**Ideally this is the point you should just be able to press spacebar to play the song and start adjusting the plugin.

At the moment you have to click on one of the buttons next to the "VST program" field and then cancel out to take the focus away from the "VST program" field

Even adjusting some of the knobs/sliders on the plugin gui will still not take the focus away from the "VST program" field so if you make an adjustment then press spacebar it still jsut clears that field and deosn't play the song

Not a bug... just annoying design/workflow

I don't think it's necessary to have the focus on that field as it is rare that you would want to type in the field straight away...
If you wanted to call up a preset you would click the drop down arrow.
If you were going to type a name to save you would probably want to tweak some settings on the plugin first

Anyone else find this annoying?

Rich

yes, with you there Rich. It would be nice if the transport controls ALWAYS worked regardless, maybe if your using a hardware controller it works.I've been using Cubendo for years with a Houston controller so I didn't need to worry about window focus as the transport ALWAYS worked from the Houston.

Hey guys, that is why there is the Ctrl + Spacebar option to start/stop (pause) playback in those situations. ;)

Although Ctrl-Space is a fairly well-known way round this it's still the case that Space means Play/Stop for the rest of the time, so having to remember to suddenly do it a different way in certain circumstances is not ideal.

It's horrible to have to teach people about that because it's an "exception to the rule" of how to make REAPER play.. one of the key operations.

Actually, it is not unique to REAPER. ACID Pro 6 & Vegas 7 have the same facility, for those rare times when you don't have "focus", but still want to use the transport. It is a nice option to have. With the Ctrl + Spacebar option you can even use the transport, in REAPER, when the Metronome or even the Preferences dialog boxes, among other things, is active & open. ;)

Right Billy - I figured it was copied from Vegas behavior.. but is totally alien coming from ProTools where Ctrl+Space means record (and I guess plenty of ex ProTools users would map it that way in REAPER for familiarity).

Simply put, although focussing to that box makes sense (to be able to scroll through presets with arrow keys) since you're unlikely to want a space as your first character in a preset name I'd far rather hitting space after changing preset made REAPER play the preset I've just switched to.

There's a good chance when flicking through VSTi presets you'll have one hand on a music keyboard and the other on the pc keyboard - so just hitting space rather than space with a modifier is also more comfortable for that reason as well as being consistent.
