Digits dropped from track names when loading a clip
Numbers at the beginning or end of the clip's name are dropped, leading to ambiguous track names

When I drag a media item into the arrange view to create a new track the name from the media item is automatically assigned to the track.

On inspection it looks like number sections at the beginning or end of the item name are dropped (unless that would mean a blank name). Number sections in the middle of the item name are retained. So the track names do not accurately reflect the loaded clip.

Here's some items dragged at random. You can see the differences.

In many cases useful, relevant info is dropped but I'm not sure what the right solution would be.

3.06 still is dropping digits at the end.

Example: "120 Athmo 2.wav"

-> " 2" dropped

Digits are no longer stripped off the front when naming files, but Reaper still strips digits off the end. Gluing, rendering takes, etc can create new media names like "Athmo 001", "Athmo 002". Trailing digits are stripped to avoid getting names like "Athmo 01 001", or worse still, rendering "Live Jam 2009" to "Live Jam 2010."

Ok, but "Fixed" sounds better as status.

Understood, but I strongly feel that trailing digits should be retained (make it a Preference if needed). If I did not want a clip named "Athmo 01 001" then I would change the track name to "Athmo" first.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something but I'm not sure how rendering "Live Jam 2009" would result in "Live Jam 2010" though - I specify the render name myself.

Here's another example - note how the clip name has been created:

Please have another look at this.

In situations where Reaper appends its own numbering why not have that number be appended in some type of bracket? i.e. {}, [], (),<>. Maybe even put in an abbreviation to know what type of action was performed.

For example

midi 01.mid becomes midi 01 <glu 1>.mid

This is still happening.

Trailing numbers will still be stripped. Please read the explanation above.

I'm not getting this either, let's see:

Item name: Doumbek 01-100.wav

Case 1: Glue item

Reaper creates new files named as:

01-Doumbek 01-100-glued-090917_1400.wav
01-Doumbek 01-100-glued-090917_1400-01.wav

What's the problem with inserting them later in the project and glue them? Reaper would add the date at the end always + a number:

02-01-Doumbek 01-100-glued-090917_1400-glued-090917_1401.wv
02-01-Doumbek 01-100-glued-090917_1400-glued-090917_1401-01.wv
...

Case 2: Render items as new takes

Reaper will create new files named as:

Doumbek 01-100 render 001.wav
Doumbek 01-100 render 002.wav

What's the problem with inserting them later in the project and render them? Reaper will always assign a different number to it.

What I mean here is there's no problem at all (at least for me) to have files with a lot of numbers in their names as long as they are properly labeled when you import them.

I must be missing something or I just don't understand what you mean schwa.

+1 to Mercado, I don't see the issue with allowing trailing numbers. Reaper can just append it's glue or render numbers to the file name in addition to any existing numbers.

If I didn't want a trailing number in the file name, I wouldn't have named it that way. But I did name it that way, for a reason :/

I'm also frustrated by this number-truncating behaviour.
Please make it a preference.

I don't like this. Please, no deleting digits somewhere.
