Rpp-bak ... keeping the important ones
A proven way to keep backup sizes small and much more managable

The 1000 word image:

Optional ZIP compression of several files in to a *.RppZip (or RppBakZip)

Archives are created after the t2 time or by default on every file.

Zip compression is fast at default compression level 6. For example, creating a ZIP archive of 151 files totalling ~55 MB compressed to an archive of 7 MB in three seconds in the same directory.

The user can then drop the RppZip in to Reaper and it will unpack the file to the location the Zip files is, if it's writable, or ask the user to resave immeadiatly, or to a standard location.

Naming the Zip archive if it encompasses many more files should reflect the range of time the sessions were saved at.

Parameters are
  • t1 for when the backups begin to be checked for thinning out and/or compression

  • t2 for when a the thinning out stops and there can definitely be compression of an entire day or up to 24 session files in to one.

  • Backups per hour, day or week at time=t2.

You might ask why bother. I had the idea because I'd accumulated over 1 GB of session backups after just one day in a recent mix, sometimes even more. Rpp-bak files are messy, in the way and BIG once they grow in numbers, just like zombies.
