Oh I see. The old behavior you are referring to was a bug, the recording settings were incorrectly ignored when auto-punch recording into a single item, but respected when the same recording settings did not happen to intersect an existing media item. The bug was fixed in 7.17 (June 2024):
Sorry, I misread your original bug report. The bugfix I referred to was when using the "add lanes" settings. When not adding lanes, and overlapping recording set to "add media items in layers", it makes sense that item auto-punch recording should add takes. We will restore the old (pre-7.17) behavior.
