Coming back to this one, I've solved the issue on my end.
In the project settings -> media menu -> "Path to save media files" field I had entered
"\media"
(without quotation marks)
This backslash at the start is unnecessary and is what was tripping Reaper up. Changing the field simply to :
"media"
has solved the problem for me - media items are going in the specified folder as expected, and the action "Open selected item source media in explorer/finder" is working as expected.
