Just thinking about it now and it makes perfect sense.

Folders are like busses. So the individual fader has no idea what's going on upstream.

VCAs don't control the summed output. They actually lower the individual faders.

So there's a few workarounds until Reaper has true VCA faders.

In my "Mixing Rock" title, I used busses to create a parallel compression effect.

The only sends on the drums was a drum reverb plugin.

So what I did was buss the drum reverb return to the drum buss as well. So the drum reverb level would stay constant while raising and lowering the buss.

When that is not an option (because your returns are being used by many different instruments) grouping using Master and Slaves makes the most sense as they will control the level of the individual tracks.
