I neglected to mention that I wasn't using Sibelius with its internal sounds but with NI Kontakt using the VSL Factory Patches, and using the Soundset Project's Kontakt 5 Factory Library mapping.

What they do with articulations is pretty cool - not 100% comprehensive but quite useful. Point entirely taken about the lack of control of final output, I'm hoping Reaper will do far better for that.
