Thanks, folks! I'm "maintaining" an archlinux package of the client here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=55075
It compiled smoothly without serious warnings, so that's already an improvement over the old ninjam client.

About the JACK/PortAudio question: We should have both, I think.
Most serious musicians under Linux will configure JACK one day, so they are happy if there is a simple JACK backend. I myself would use it and nothing else.
PortAudio is nice for easy portability, so we shouldn't leave it out as well.
But JACK available only over PortAudio only makes it harder for the JACK users under Linux. One more piece of software to configure, one more layer of bugs...
