The driver can choose a sample format in order to achieve the desired bit depth and to operate as efficiently as it can. I think the developers of the Zoom driver intended to have 24 bit samples padded to 32 bits (which simplifies a lot of things and can be more efficient), but instead report it as "32 bits", which is a mistake.
