one great hint I can give you is to turn off the GUI when trying out something new. Your eyes cand deceive you a lot into thinking the plugin has sonic voodoo when in fact it's just a pretty picture with sexy blinking lights.
Reacomp is a hell of a compressor that can be transparent if you want it to, or have quite a character if you know what settings to fiddle with. Is it as colored as a LA2A? No. But turn off that sexy gui of a "LA2A emulator" plug, and you'll see (or rather hear) that it's not that awesome.
That being said, I do have 3rd party plugs, and some plugins really ARE different. But yeah, turn off that sexy replica of a vintage comp or super nice visualization widndow for your EQ for a minute...
Now you can really judge it for what is in fact the most important thing. HOW DOES IT SOUND?
