First off, your Mac Pro definitely has Toslink audio in and out. I'm not sure on what kind of connector though. If you're lucky, it's a standard Toslink connector. If not, you'd still need Apple's wonky Toslink to 3,5 mm jack cable adapter.

Doesn't the Apogee have Toslink? I seem to remember it does. Could it be the ADAT port doubles as a Toslink?

The RME card will not fit unless it's a PCIe version. And I believe the RME Digi 196/8 is PCI only. You can visually check, as the PCI connector has a lot more pins than the PCIe.
