Default try a resistor?

If the signal is too hot maybe you can put a small resistor, say 5K Ohms, in line with the
input lead + side. Radio Shack has inexpensive 10K PCB mount trimmer resistors (AKA trimmer pots) you could tweak until you get the right level. Then you could leave it soldered-in or measure with an ohmmeter and replace with a fixed value resistor. R/S also has packs of small wattage resistors pretty cheap. I would not expect you to need more than a half watt resistor but using one with a larger power rating would not hurt. A 1/4 watt might work as well.

This might also help signal to noise ratio, effectively swamping hiss and maybe even A/C hum.
