Maybe you are in luck, they are in the process of adding firewire support to ALSA itself, that means no need for ffado anymore. If I understand correctly the snd-dice module ought to work in later kernels. See:

AFAIK, a TI fw interface is a good idea for DICE I/II chipset cards.
