Yes, in archlinux you only tend to install what you need, though IMO it's gotten a lot more bloated with systemd. Nowdays I have loads of services running and file systems mounted only due to things being installed as dependencies.

Personally I've capitulated and only take notion if I encounter some problem. I guess you can call it being pragmatic as I don't have the time nor interest to fight the distro all the time
