Default Strange stutter, worse with increasing ASIO buffer size...

Lately I have been experiencing a strange stuttering behavior from Reaper. When I hit space to play, Reaper immediately plays for a short time, and then halts and waits for what seems an equal time, whereafter it continues to play normally. There is only this single stutter, and then the project plays fine; no crackling, nothing, just that single stutter.

Contrary to what is usually the case with stuttering, if I increase the ASIO buffer size, the issue becomes more pronounced. It seems that the time Reaper plays before halting and waiting, is directly correlated to the ASIO buffer size; the larger the buffer, the longer Reaper plays and then waits. Roughly, at 2048 samples 2s, 1024 1s, 512 0.5s, 256 0.1s. At 128 samples it seems the issue disappears...!

Though I can work at 128 ASIO buffer size (Reaper plays fine at 128 samples, CPU is around 20%), I used to work at 512 with no stutter, and if I want to do video, I guess I will have to work at larger buffer size, so I really would want to fix this issue. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks.
