Sorry, now It's my turn for the stupid question: did you try with "Clear cache/re-scan" instead of just "Re-scan", right?

Maybe there's a plugin that crashes the scan procedure before it gets to that folder?
I don't have a Mac at hands today so I'm just guessing.
