Stair-stepping of filters sounds like an automation issue to me FWIW, not a sample rate quality issue per se but probably missing something. Tiny margin of difference is really the key for me. With anything but the most sparse mixes, it should really never bother most anyone but YMMV. IOW, I wouldn't bark at someone using 96k for getting rid of zipper noises no more than I'd bark at myself for using lower buffers for the rare occasion the automation reaction needs to be super fast. I just tend to keep that and "96k sounds better" in two different buckets.
