Default Steve Vai's tone

I think "Frank" from the Ultrazone has the best saturated guitar sound I've ever heard (and I'm 60!). Is there a tone freak here who has some advice for achieving that via mic'ing or even a VST?

I currently use a JET guitar (with Duncan JB), Epiphone Valve Jr modded for higher gain, 12" in open back cab, close mic RE20.

I got to meet Steve Vai backstage at after a show in So Cal last year.

His set up was his Jem Guitars, Carvin amp heads and cabs, fraxtal Axe Fx and a Moreley wah.

Given that he's using a very differently configured amp than the Valve jr your best bet is probably to try and stay as clean as possible through the amp and figure out an FX unit for live work.

From what he has said about his recordings, I believe he records mostly DI and then gets his FX from the Fractal FX units after the facts.

Of course no matter what he plays he's going to sound like Steve Vai.

Somehow Dimi seems to nail the Vai tone regardless of the VST he is using. I bet he has some tips

Regarding "Frank", there seems to be some heavy chorusing going on in there.

Via talks about his tone in Episode #29 of Jude Gold's fantastic "No Guitar Is Safe" podcast.
