I just upgraded today, I have a 2011 MacBookPro 16G RAM, 1T SSD. During the upgrade it converted my disk from HFS+ to APFS format.
I think it launches quicker, but that's all I noticed. I haven't done a lot of work, and I only use it to record band rehearsals so I can practice my parts at home and sometimes make a mix for the other guys.
I also have a 24-core MacPro (2012) 64G RAM, 1T SSD PCIe boot, about 11T RAID1 disk. It left the boot disk as HFS+. I don't notice any difference. It's also the server for my other machines time machine backups.
Every machine in the house is busy making huge time machine backups as a result of the upgrades so that could slow stuff down.
So maybe the new APFS is some improvement. I don't know. But it seems OK.
