Default free gear

Audio Assault's the punch plugin is currently a time-limited freebie (Offer Valid until March 27th 8pm CST). I can't comment on how good it is as I haven't downloaded it yet, but going by their previous free offering (druminator) it might be worth a look.

https://www.audio-assault.com/thepun...eid=db451c3b01

And here's another great free one-knobber!

I recently stumbled across these while searching for a free x64 Pitch Shift VST:

PitchTech LADSPA and VST Plugins
Ear-catching exotic and experimental free audio effects
(Available in x86 and x64 versions)

The developer says "Most of the effects have a "quality" setting. Leave it to the lowest value for realtime use or quick tests. Higher quality values can be up to 100 times slower (!), and usually do not run at realtime speed (there are only useful for off-line processing)."
If you attempt to change the quality setting REAPER crashes.

Nevertheless some of the FX are pretty good.
PT Octave Shifter produces a very stable shift without the tinny warbling you get in a lot of pitch shifters. (But we already have the excellent Cockos ReaPitch.)
PT STN separates the sound into Sinuses, Transients and Noise, and allows the level of each part to be adjusted....works well (similar to the 'voice of snow' plugin).
PT Smooth + Rough and PT Stable + Unstable are interesting.

Default Impressive Free Amp+Effects+Cabs Sim Plugin

I am a happy S-Gear user but I just ran across this free Amp Sim and was very impressed. This is now my "go to" recommendation for free/inexpensive Amp Sim plugs.

https://tonelib.net/gfx-overview/

(This was discussed over in the Linux forum, but I did not see it mentioned anywhere else. I also posted this on another "Free Plugins" Thread, but this thread looks more comprehensive.)

The tonelib suite isn't too bad, little fizzy, which I helped by placing airwindows hombre after it.
Am sure there are other tricks too.

Had an old DSK Indian DreamZ laying around and wondered if they made something else? seems like it.

"DSK Music Virtual Instruments are 100% free for private and commercial use."

They have "Pro" versions also but I can't speak about them, just found this out myself, so and, some might be 32bit, but hey..

I used to use several of their plugins back in the day. Looking through the list this is a huger bang for the buck. Wondering about picking it up "just because" - at least I have more hard drive space now than back then... Tanks, Smudjie!

Shame - I just dumped it. Great for rock and/or metal players, though.

After reading this, I am wondering if I should go back & try it with hombre....

Oooh, I like this list

Epicverb is my go to verb for large spaces and air.

Oatmeal is my go to synth for hardsync. It's super light as well.

In the jsfx subforum there's also ReEq which is lovely.

I made a few jsfx, they're probably a tad too hungry for your list, but maybe some of them can go in the honorable mentions.

Stereo bub ii, a small widener with crossover that doesn't affect the mono mix.
Tight compressor, a fast attack compressor with optional oversampling.

The following two are a bit heavier on the cpu, but can add quite a bit of color:
Squashman, multiband distortion plugin with lfo's, envelopes and dynamics processing.
Filther, a drawable spline waveshaper with dual nonlinear filters. Fully automatable with lfo, envelopes, dynamics and step sequencer.

The others are probably a bit too specialized for this list.

TbT's "TLs-1295-LEA" compressor:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=222369

Be sure to watch the video, and pay specific attention to what's going on in the second half of it. This is a great plugin.

For Windows and Linux. There are other plugins he's released but so far they're only Linux (Windows folks, keep your fingers crossed):

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=222420

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=222397

He'll be releasing more plugins too. All of them (at least so far) have those extra features in the bottom menu.

They look great... sadly, no plans for Mac versions. I use both Windows at the studio where I work and Mac at my home studio, so I try to find plugins that I can use in my projects, wherever I might be working. Hopefully TbT will reconsider porting these to Mac.

Am no Axe wizard and been happy with kuassa Sims but the fizz is historically a symptom of the less good Sims, still handy perhaps for the stomps.

That's doubtful since he has never owned or worked on a Mac and actually recently switched from Windows to Linux, as he told us on that first thread. If anything I'd say Windows users should feel fortunate to get Windows versions of these.

Default Still Updated?

It appears the original post that is supposedly updated regularly hasn't been updated in over 4 years.

The very first recommended freeware 'oatmeal' is a dead link.

Are the recommendations made by the original poster still valid in 2019?

I'm new to Reaper and the entire music scene... so learning a lot right now. Thanks for any thoughts!

I recently (like within the last week or so) purchased the Pro samples. Went with the SFZ package to use in Renoise. There are some fantastic samples in there. The set might not be worth hundreds of dollars, but at $25USD, I consider it a steal.

I have been away from the forum (and my own studio) for quite a while because of some serious (but great) things happening in my life. Now slowly getting back into making music and just now back to visiting the forum somewhat regularly.

I'm planning a complete overhaul of the actual list. Will be focusing on 64bit plugins as that is where everything is moving tmo. I'll keep a 'honorable mentions' section for the truly great and legendary 32bit plugins (if they are still available).

It's good to be back

It's up to you, of course, but I suggest making a new thread for just the 64bit plugins and leave this one intact with a note on the first post pointing to the new 64bit thread.

Thanks for the welcome back Lucas

The thing is that this thread is linked from many places on the web (other forums, etc.) and the list is pretty much out of sync with the current state of affairs in VST land (as scruffy mentioned). So it needs an update anyway and I'm sure that many plugins are no longer available and/or suffer from compatibility issues with current reaper versions, as I have encountered already myself while bringing my own reaper setup back up to spec.

There's also the fact that this is already a sticky so it's the first one people stumble upon when searching for this stuff. However, I might go the other way around from your suggestion and create a new satellite thread to keep the old list available.

It might be a few weeks before I actually get at it, so suggestions and opinions are welcome for me to ponder

Welcome back Gremlin

Yes, please keep the thread as is with an addendum or whatever.

For us antiques who still run 32 bit, it will give us some breathing space while we save up for new machines.

By the way, almost all of my countless vst's still run smoothly on the latest iteration of windows 10.

Many thanks for all of your hard work in the past.

Regards

SR

Thanks for the warm welcome back guys, it brought a big smile on my face

OK, I took a good look at the current list and it appears to me a lot of stuff there is already available as 64bit versions. So I'll keep the list as it is but I will of course update as much as possible and put plugins that are ONLY 32bit as a separate item under each section.

It will be quite some work so it will be done in small steps. I'll post updates here as I work through it.

Hey Morgon, I'm doing good thanks, thanks for asking Back working and back cycling (it happened while cycling as you might remember) and back posting in the lounge (is that a good thing???). It's been just over 18 months now.. I'm left with some permanent restrictions to my right arms mobility and of course my hand still has little function but it's my 'normal' now and thankfully it doesn't really stop me doing anything - just some things I'm a bit slower/awkward at. All in all though I'm doing good and just thankful it wasn't worse.

As I'm not going to restructure everything and keeping the list in it's current (but updated) form, I already started working on it (as I can do this in smal steps)

I updated the 'bread and butter synths' section. Added Tyrell N6 and TAL Noisemaker as they represent the current best sound quality in free synths. Also checked the links; Oatmeal has a link to a valid download again.

More to come

Helm VSTi is another good freebie. At least one major bug in it though.. it requires the sample rate on your audio interface to be 44,100khz for the arp to sync correctly. If it's anything else, the arp will play too fast or too slow. That probably renders this VSTi useless for a lot of people, however, at least as an arp. Not sure if the developer ever plans to fix that, but I did mention it to him. Outside of the arp functionality, it's not too bad of a synth.

Hey TG To cut a long story short.. I got literally hit by a truck while out on my road bike (cycling) back in Feb 2018. Fractured Humerus, Elbow, Scapula, Rib.. left with Radial nerve palsy. I also sustained a brain bleed but thankfully that's never caused any problems. I was wearing a helmet - which undoubtedly saved my life - and I'm still here, still mastering albeit one handed now lol
