If you want to drag an item from one track to another, into a lane other than lane 1, you have to create that lane in the source track. Clunky.

[Edit] This came up when I was dragging an item into the empty space in a fourth lane, between comp items. It means you have to drag the new comp to lane one, then into the desired lane. This is murder with multiple items you can't necessarily see. It just seems a drag modifier would make sense, so that the lane creator bar should be an option when dragging. [Edit] And I know this was one of the original issues with lanes - that extra lanes kept appearing - but in this case it's desirable.

The add lane bar has a pretty good UX ... allowing users to add multiple lanes with it introduces wack complexity imo

If you want to help Reaper get better, just be like Embass.

See my edit: It was the difference between lane-dragging now and when it first -started that I missed. Might want to watch the attitude.

bolgwrad wants to be able to drag media items from a numbered lane in one track to a different numbered lane in another track. This is the first build where that isn't supported.

If you could indulge me for a minute, could I ask the particular use case for what you are doing? What exactly are the two recordings there (the ones marked "take 1" and "new take") and how did you end up with different takes on different tracks in the first place? (not in any way judging anyone's work flow, just trying to get a handle on use cases here)

If lanes are not only for comping, so in sound design it can be useful for layering.

Yes. There may be tons of applications. If the samples are the same, we can create a kind of delay, doubler. We can apply FX on the samples to obtain different sounds, like thicker / complex sound. We can also put several overlaped samples in a track for the FX inserted in the track or for its sends.

Admittedly I haven't used lanes much, but that feels clunky indeed. Intuitively I'd expect the following:

Case 1: All selected items are in the same lane

I can drag the lane wherever I want, because WYSIWYG.

Case 2: Selected items are in lanes on the same track

I can drag lane 4,5,6 from track 1 to lane 2,3,4 on track 2 (assuming track 2 has more than 1 lane already)

Case 3: Selected items are in lanes on different tracks

The current behavior seems perfectly reasonable.

There is the same issue when we want to drag a media from media explorer. We can only drag the item on the last lane.

For the sound design and production flexibility wouldn't it be nice if we had a way to move selected items (from different tracks) to a single track in different lanes?

Something like "move/copy selected items to single track". I would prefer this by dragging tho. Just like In Media Explorer i would like to drag different samples to a single track in different lanes.

Sorry to ask, but what would be the case for this when you drag just one item from a single lane and in this case from the first lane? If you drag from the second lane of one track to another it gives you the option to choose the lane you want.
Imo it would be better to be able and rearrange the lanes on tracks, so when you copy or move to another lane more than one items and you want the item on first lane to be on second lane, to be able and drag from the lane numbers and rearrange their order.

In your case since it's just a single item, i can't think of a use to have it on different lane when there's no other item on other lane.

For case 1 this happens only for a single item, why would you want to add extra empty lanes? (you can always add new lanes from lane adder area) I would prefer if someone wants to change the lane number when more than one items and lanes exist, to rearrange their order from the lane numbers.
For case 2 with more items and lanes i think it's already possible.

Yeah, agreed. Maybe implode/explode lane actions? A mouse modifier might also be handy but "Media item left drag" is probably too crowded already.

Not sure I understand. Where do I want to add empty lanes? (and case 1 also happens for multiple selected items that are in the same lane)

You can try out +dev1202, afaict schwa implemented the changes as suggested.

Also i think the button with lane number would benefit with:
- modifier (right click) for prompting and being able to rename the layer
- modifier for toggling mute/unmute
- modifier for toggling solo/unsolo


Maybe this could work/fit well on an automated workflow on the direction of new and different comping systems/styles and flexible for other uses.

Yep yep for both project tracks and Media explorer selected medias.

yes it's already very crowded (and messy IMO), at some point they should consider a tool system to Accommodate (for those who want), a simplified modifier system based on tool selection - RE Tool, Splice tool, Pointer tool, etc, since reaper modifiers are already saturated, and reaper will continue to grow on features that require additional drag modifiers.

Sometimes, items height can be very little. Hard to notice/read them.

Is it possible to add some height, please?



It would be great to have the possibility to custom item lane label.
