Default Envelope Colors

+ Envelopes: add preference pane "Envelope Colors" to allow defining custom envelope colors based on envelope name

Great feature !!!
With the panel, maybe add an option to fill string (parameter/fx) with last touch parameter/envelope like the action "FX: Show/hide track envelope for last touched FX parameter"

I've made similar requests for walter, for a more dynamic approach, but with code, far less user friendly than you did. Adding acces to more scalar variables and colors.

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=280124
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=280611

Having both would be awesome. I don't use full templates anymore, with reaper I freely drag&drop the stuff I feel on the moment, and it order/color/layout/etc itself with actions, scripts and walter. Already so powerful and creative. More scalar and colors, more magic.

Any chance we could get an option for envelope breakpoint size? For my aging eyes with hi-res screens, they feel pretty tiny.

They are not only tiny visually, but sometimes difficult to grab.

While this is really good, sometimes you just want to color envelopes like tracks. Would it be possible too?

Default gain reduction meter

oh, just saw the gain reduction meter, so cool !!! Works great with pro c2 ! Could, as option, gain reduction meter have its own separate meter with value, in walter, like a tcp.gainmeter/tcp.gainmeter.font/tcp.gainmeter.color ?

Also, seeing some work done on the Preferences dialog... would it not be possible to increase its height so that we don't have to scroll in the left sidepane? And make the search field wider? Make the whole dialog wider too so that the tooltip text doesn't have to be so damn tiny anymore...

Thanks!

Making it resizable would also require adding reflowing logic for all those checkboxes and labels and whatnot. That seems a bit too much work. But to have a nice and consistently spaced improved layout of everything would definitely be super nice to have, at last...

* Includes feature branch: GR metering as embedded UI for third-party VSTs
When MIDI input is active, the GR meter suddenly shows full scale rather than the real-time reduction, which otherwise works fine.

In terms of appearance, I think the zero point of the GR bar should be positioned so that it doesn't interfere with the readout area (which I believe is proportional to the length of the meter), and of course it should match the scale of the meter. I think there's a problem now that it covers the decimal points on the meter display.

Here's a GIF:

+1 for a Preferences resizable window, which could make the new MIDI Devices window easier to use.

Also, while we are mentioning the Preferences, could you please add a "size limit" field for backup files? I need frequent backups and was saved so many times by the .bak files, but when at the end of the day, I sometimes have 50 of them, each with an increasing size.

Some ideas are discussed in the following FR topic: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=274694

Speaking of the backup preference, isn't it a good idea to let reaper keep multiple auto-backups by default? I think it's one of the preference many people configure first.

There are theme colors, "VU meter gain reduction background" and "VU meter gain reduction indicator". The gain reduction and MIDI activity indicators are not separately WALTERable as of now.

Since there's work on the UI side of the program, I'd like to suggest an option to "lock" tracks to the left or right side of the mixer. With this we could keep these tracks visible all the time while scrolling the mixer. It'd be good for folder tracks or tracks used as groups/buses.

How in fact does the GR Meter it get it's information. It works with ReaComp. It does not work with LoudMax. What other plugins are supported ?

That was me about the Tukan. [edit ignore this bit, I just spotted the actual GR display. The JS: Automatic (Vocal) Gain Rider works, so you could try tweaking the script itself, see what happens.]

BTW: I have two video cards, three monitors. Up until v7Pre, I used to have display glitches with higher-end VSTs (Fabfilter etc) where the drop-down menus would only display on the default monitor, and the real-time display would only display on the non-default monitor(s). Now, all is perfect; all displays on all video cards, so whatever Cockos have done, double-thumbs-up.

This is supported through VST extensions published by presonus:

VST3: Presonus::IGainReductionInfo
VST2: effVendorSpecific, 'PreS', 'GRdB'

If the plugin supports either of these extensions, REAPER will display the gain reduction in the track meters by default, the user doesn't need to do anything to enable it. Although I suppose it is possible that some individual plugins might have a configuration setting to enable it. ReaComp and ReaLimit do support these.

Gain reduction reporting may be available through extensions for other plugin types too, if anyone comes across other methods in the wild let us know.

This still stands.
And I'd actually prefer the option to show those GR meters per track instead of all at once.

Default list of gain reduction meter plugins

From my collection of plugins these are the few I've found that display gain reduction on reaper track meters

ReaComp
ReaLimit
bx_townhouse Buss Comp
BX_masterdesk
bx_masterdesk Classic
Pulsar Smasher

I checked Cockos, Tukan, IK, iZotope (ozone 9), Arturia, kHz bundles

Softube is supposed to work but I don't own any. can someone check?

Default bug?

In v7 beta theme something didn't seem right with clicking and dragging in cockos and JS plugins. The click target is way smaller and harder to make quick changes.

It says maximum vertical scroll although the feature is zoom. Probably a typo.

So i think it's appropriate to draw attention to this bug report

No toggle with 'View: Toggle track zoom to maximum height' if Max zoom is < 100%

because the bug is present in the this dev build as well.

A UI glitch in the Region/Marker Manager is also still there

+ Preferences: disable automatic fadein/fadeout for imported media by default for new users

Excellent
Perhaps even finally change the default settings to a structured project folder as I expressed here in this video but also Kenny Gioia and Jon Tidaye (and others) did the same.
It helps to have everything ordered.
A Project that's a project and not a chaotic set.
We're in 2023. And the Audacity way to work of the 90's is definitely dead.

I passed several days to help users and even customers to properly setup Reaper getting out form the crappy situation they were unvolutary digging into, due the "default setup" with which Reaper is delivered now.

Confirming!

It's very hard to point exactly at the thin line (it is in range of few pixels only) under the also very small fader cap (I do not like this change - previous bigger/larger caps were much much better).

Manipulating these faders in new theme is highly uncomfortable
