Linux: Performance issues when redrawing waveforms
Hi there,
I'm running the latest Reaper via WineAsio under Ubuntu. When I had Feisty installed, everything worked perfectly, but with the Gutsy update I got serious performance issues: Reaper takes very long to redraw the waveforms of media items (it's getting slower the more items are visible), the program even freezes while redrawing. Here's a screen capture, first with waveforms turned off and then with only one track showing waveforms:

Am I the only one with this problem? Can anyone suggest some settings to fix this?
Thanks in advance,
404.

I'm seeing this too.
Changing the Appearance preferences to
UI updates: Lazy always Unbuffered
fixed it.
Also, running Reaper in a Wine desktop window, seems to improve performance as well.

I checked out various files last night, to see if I was having the problem you described. Sorry, no such problem here, but I don't have any files with a great multitude of waveforms. I'm running 2.007 on an AMD64 3200+, with an nVidia 7300GS video card (512 MB VRAM), maybe that helps ?
Is the problem persistent, i.e., does it occur regardless of the number of files displayed ?
System here is JAD 1.0, Open SUSE 10.2.

Just out of interest,- have you upgraded to the latest wine?
I'm wondering if the recent gutsy upgrade has caused a problem somewhere along the line.
Kind regards

ok.
Telling Reaper to not stop the audio engine on Stop has cured my glitches.
Also,- try lowering the latency in Jack. Mine wont even work at over 512samples.
Kind regards

oh.
And DISABLE VISUAL EFFECTS in gutsy. Use metacity instead.
You can of course install the old compiz control panel thingy and tweak it better.
Kind regards

Running it in a desktop window harms performance here.

I haven't determined whether it helps or harms here. With it, I don't have problems with hidden panels. Otherwise I'm not sure I see/hear any especial improvement. Perhaps it's one of those things that will help some systems and do little or nothing on others.
How does it harm performance on your machine ?

Havent't tested it intensively yet, but it seems like 2.009 resolved the performance issues
@daverich: Install v2.009, then choose options > peaks > rebuild all peaks.
GREAT WORK, JUSTIN!
