Default 18i20 and rendering lower sample rates from a project with higher sample rate

Hello there, weird issue here:
I have Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 on Windows 10 Home.
I set Reaper to 44100 16-bit WAV, ASIO.
I want to render in 16-bit PCM 22050 Hz, Mono.
After clicking on "Render", 2 boxes appear:
1. Some devices may need a few second to switch samplerates.
This box will automaticlaly close.

2. Could not set samplerate to 22050, current rate 44100.
What do I do with that? I totally need 22050 Hz.
Thank you in advance for the insight.

Did you try offline rendering?
I think the Interface doesn't do 22050Hz.

OMG I completely overlooked that. Thank you, it works.
But I don't get how it can if you say it can't...
Shouldn't it still use the Focusrite ASIO driver?

You are rendering to your hard drive so you shouldn't need any interface or soundcard (or drivers) to render, at least theoretically... I haven't tried it... I don't have a computer without a soundcard...

Correct, but to test the theory you can just choose the dummy driver reaper has or possibly none at all.

Sorry for my long absence, it was like a time warp... I was trying to handle several things but it appears I'm obviously a single-tasker so I lost almost a year. But finally music became the ultimate priority so just saying your advice isn't lost, and each bit of it matters, so thank you for that.

I had no idea rendering doesn't need the interface. I remember I bought Scarlett 18i20 precisely because I wasn't satisfied with render quality - losing depth in output file compared to the playback in Reaper. Maybe my thinking was wrong, but I was getting lots of cracks during the playback, so a dedicated card was a must anyway. Maybe my thinking was wrong again, and it was rather a CPU/RAM issue. But we had a small family band (RIP that unfortunately) so multiple inputs were tempting. That's just a brief history
