Default Jamstix

In Jamstix, on the Mapping tab, set the number of Outputs to 8 (Under "Sounds").

Also on the Mapping tab, set:

Kick to output 1
Snare to output 2
Hihat to output 3
Ride to output 4
Cymbals to output 5
Toms to output 6
Percussion to output 7

Channels 15/16 on the Jamstix VSTi track are spare and not output (just available as inputs)

Default BFD

Heres some templates for BFD...

There is no kit loaded, so just click the FX button on the last track to bring up BFD and load away.

Also, any midi files go in the last track. If you want a new midi file, select the last track and use Insert>New MIDI Item, in the menu bar at the top. Default is one bar, draw a loop for another size.

BFD needs to be running to audition sounds, easiest way is Options>Prefs>Audio>tick "Always run track FX", again in the top menu bar.

Have fun.

Ok, this is an adaption of the Samletank 2 Free for the PowerCore Access Virus. If anyone else has a Virus, especially one with a PowerCore Compact Firewire, I would be interested to know how you get on with this Template.

Regards

ETA: If anyone can explain how to automate the Virus' numerous paramaters on each of the it's seperate ouput channels, I'd be interested to know how it's done. Thanks.

Here are a few:

multi i/o Stylus RMX track preset:
Folder "vsti RMX" with plug-in
- 8 x midi tracks (one per instrument slot)
Folder gra RMX outs A-H
- 8 X audio tracks.

Multi i/o Kontakt 2:
Folder "vsti Kontakt 2" with plug-in
- 8 x midi tracks
-stereo return

2 x Reason 3 rewired
one is a stereo return, one is 24 channels of audio returned.
-both similar in terms of set up to the above.

if memory serves, all of the above are configured such that the midi tracks are not shown in the mixer.

I have been thinking recently, that all I really need is the following:

1. VSTi (generic - no plug loaded) with 8 midi + a stereo return
2. VSTi (generic - no plug loaded) with 8 midi + 8 stereo channel returns.
3.A ducking Pair
4. generic bass
5. generic e guitar
6. generic a guitar
7. Generic Lead vox
8. generic bg vox.

and one or 2 others that I am forgetting

cheers,
T

A setup for Addictive Drums.

Outputs all setup, just make sure inside AD that you turn on the out buttons for all the channels.

Sorry for the silly question, but I can not open these templates in Reaper. How comes?

I tried renaming them to .RPP files and then they open, but as empty projects.

copy, or save them to your track templates folder... if memory serves, it is in the Application Data/REAPER/Track Presets folder.

Hi,

no one having a Battery 3 template?

BTW has it really to be so complicated to insert a multi-vsti?
I mean it is much much easier in every other soft host I have ever seen.

I totally agree with you. I've already suggested that an automated set up for muti-output Vsti's (especially synths, where multiple midi channels per output are used), would be a huge leap forward for Reaper.

I'm no coder or anything but if all the other apps out there can do it then pissing about with templates seems a bit dark ages to me. But what do I know?

Cubase4 has just added Track Presets(what REAPER calls Track Templates)...this aint dark ages, its the future.

You set them up how you want them once, then they are available instantly forever. Its really is not that hard...if youve read the manual and the wiki but still need some help, go ask some questions in the Q+A section of the forum...there are plenty of folk that will be glad to help get you going.

Have you still got them renamed as .rpp files?

Try redownload the templates and try again.

I find it difficult to get completely through a project using multi out Vsti's in Reaper because, sooner or later, for me at least, Reaper crashes. Now I don't know if that's to do with my set up (I have an Emu 1820m, a UAD-1 and a PowerCore firewire with a Virus multi timberal synth), or whether it's me making a cock up of the routing. I don't think that's the case but I guess it could be. I do find the audio and midi routing in Reaper a tad confusing. All I know is everything works sweet in Cubase.

In Cubase all you do is load your Vsti, set its outputs, put one on midi channel 1, 2, 3 etc corrosponding to your Vsti's outputs, 1, 2, 3 etc and you're ready to record midi on those channels. The audio channels are sorted automatically, without you having to think about them. You can even hide the midi channels in the mixer if you want. Nothing could be simpler, it works, and you never have to worry about templates. I don't know about Cubase 4. I have no intenetion of buying it. I would dearly love to resolve my issues with Reaper and buy that instead but at present I dare not attenpt anything important in Reaper.

I did make a thread in the general forum about it which got over a hundred hits but not one reply.

Regards

Cheers
my take on Stylus RMX and EZDrummer plus a Hypersonic 2 template:

EZ Drummer: 8+1 Tracks (Audio/MIDI)
  • EZDrummer Vintage Rock:
  • EZ Kick
  • EZ Snare
  • EZ HiHat
  • EZ Tom 1
  • EZ Tom 2
  • EZ Overhead
  • EZ Room
  • EZ Comp Room
  • EZ MIDI Arr. (I'm adding MIDI tracks as needed usually)

  • Adjust panning and volume to taste. I have set the EZD Mixer flat/center Pan, to control all levels/Pan from the Reaper mixer

This preset includes a MIDI plugin called Velocity_Control, to adjust the playing with my Synth. I can't find a link anymore to it, I remember this plugin being written quick 'n dirty by someone on kvr in response to a user request. As it is freeware, I'll happily send a copy to anyone wanting it. It was created in Synth Edit plus a variation of it has been made in Synthmaker as a proof of concept.

Stylus RMX: 8+8 (Audio/MIDI)
  • Nothing fancy, each RMX part routed to it's proper output pair. Empty RMX slots of course.

Steinberg Hypersonic 2: 8+8 (Audio/MIDI)
  • Since Hypersonic provides a dynamic Output configuration (you can create as many MONO/STEREO Outs as you need, up to 32 channels), I'm using 8 Stereo Outs here. Also, Hypersonic has it's own MultiFX unit with 4 individual engines, providing thus 4 FX sends per Instrument.
Accordingly, I have assigned track 5-8 to the FX Outs, making them effectively Aux Returns.
I hope I don't create too much confusion here

Cheers
Raphael

err yeah i'd just like to 2nd DarkBlue's thought that yeah, this is easier for me in other DAWs... I mean, maybe I don't wanna have to bother with track templates - maybe I'm trying out a new VSTi?

There are all kind of good reasons for having some kind of auto-track setup option!

What stops you from trying out a new VSTi? When you do, you'll hardly ever need more then a Stereo Out, since you'd be mainly interested in the engine/sound/general handling/what have you feature, no? So in that case simply double click ANY VSTi of your choice to load it up in a channel. Is that automatic enough?
I remember in Cubase SX i.e., I needed to perform MORE mouseclicks to actually load and ASSIGN a VSTi to a track. Sure, multiout VSTi's created directly all available outputs in the mixer, but often I didn't WANT that many outputs. So then I go to the mixer, and ONE by ONE check the 'Can Hide' option, because you can't simply select a couple of tracks/mixerstrips and hide them all at once.
Wasn't/isn't very elegant neither.
And the new VSTi Track class in C4 offers you only a Stereo output pair for ANY instrument you call via this new function (unless it has already been fixed).

I think part of the problem when comparing workflow's and ways of doing things in daw x vs. daw y is in how the person describing it uses it. Reaper and SX have lots in common and the more I play with Reaper the more I see that.

Reaper does many things better than SX. Handling VSTI's (in general multi or not) isn't one of those things in my experience.

YMMV.

Actually I was incorrect about deleting VSTI TCP tracks. I know I've done that before but I'm not sure how, can't seem to do it now. I apologize for that error.

FL Studio gives 2 or 16 into SX depending on which module you load. Battery is fully configurable from within the VSTI so you can add and remove outputs into SX at will from inside the Battery VSTI. Same with Edirol Orchestral and a few others.

Me being still kind of a newbie with VSTI's in Reaper (in comparison to others) it would be helpful if someone could post a video showing how they do it.

I'm probably doing it wrong.

Yep, that's it Lawrence, to each his own (or however the saying goes in english, dunno).
And I didn't mean to make app x look better vs. app y, just showing another perspective/solution.

This is awesome! But is it possible to adjust the panning of the individual sub-tracks? When I try to do this, I adjust the pan on the kick, for instance, and the same panning change happens to all the drum tracks.

Can anybody please explain the basic procedure to set up a multi-out track template?

If I know how, I'll gladly spent a day setting them up for the various vst's I have (and post them here).

Has something to do with a folder track, some vst-out tracks, a midi track and a closing folder track or so?

What do you do in what order?

Any help would be nice...

Hey Mc UB, cool offer.

Yeah, just make a folder track...then add a bunch of tracks for hooking up the seperate outs for the VSTi, then add another track and load the VSTi into it and use this one as the 'end folder' track(which is where the midi files get recorded/put).

Check out the BFD templates i made for an example. Ask away if you still have any questions.

Cheers, B.

WEll, I've seen those tracks that really work, but I've found a problem trying to do my own. I've done using the 1st track to put the first Stereo Out and the VSTi (midi), but when i create the next tracks I get no output.
I can use a send from a folder track but, in this case, it happens that Snares sounds but Hats Doesn´t... it's very strange.

Thinkig about it, it would be great that the folder track was the 1st stereo and the next foldered tracks sound as they should.
I can't imaagine why it doesn´t work. I tryed that yesterday at parent's home but today it doesn't work.

Any help?

Drumatic VE needed to load the track

I've got the original rpp and works a bit different, more logical. In fact it's impossible to get sound from multiout plugins when they're at folder track. This is an exception.

Can anyone explain why i have to arm and enable monitoring to hear drums?? And can anyone explain WHY I can't put a vsti on folder track and getsound from assigned tracks put on the folder?

Here you got a strange thing.
Test both files, please.

Lightbulb Get it here: Battery 2 Template, 8 stereo outs

Pfew, it took some learning and the excelent tutorial of Talisman here: http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8355
Mind you: I only needed steps 1-4, not step 5 (setting up midi channels). The midi parts go in the second track, holding the instrument. The audio get's played back through the 8 outputs, and submixed in the group track (top) before going to the master.

But I did it, and it works like a charm! I now have a template for Battery 2 with 8 stereo outs. You can add more if you wish and need so.

Attached, have fun! When I setup another multi-out Vsti I'll be sure to drop it here as well.

greetzzzzz

[edit]Because I allready posted the attachment in another topic, I cannot do it again so it seems. To get to the template: look for my second post here: http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8355

Smile For all of you...

There are basically two different ways of using Multi out VSTi's here.

One is with an instrument playing a midi part on it's track and putting out to multiple outputs. That way, the midi data (for instance drumpatterns) are on one track also holding the instrument, and the instrument puts out to output tracks. In the case of drums this is nice, because you don't want to edit your kicks-snares-hats all on different midi-parts on different channels. Let's call this a rhythmic template for now.

The other way is the same, but with multiple midi-channels feeding the VSTi. That way you can play the instrument on different midi-channels, each with different melodies on them, playing different patches on the VSTi. You can do that for instance with Sampletank or Sonik Synth. Those ROMplers can have different samplepacks on different midi-channels. So now you can use midi-in 1 in the template to play a piano melody, while midi-in 2 is playing a Hammond organ. That's more of a melodic template if you like.

So...... Basically if you include these two basic templates, you can cater for a variety of VSTi's, drumpattern based or melodic.

Just plug your VSTi of choice in the VSTi Track, tweak it's patch and channel settings and away you go, make music! On the 8Out-4in template the midi-channels are made not to show up in the mixer, since they have no function there. If you need more or less tracks, just delete/add to them and check their routing.

Many thanx to the excellent explanation of Talisman! Read his explanation here: http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8355

To Justin: if you like, you can include these templates in the next update. It will solve nearly every Multi VSTi issue of people I think...

greetzzzz!

PS: The one with 8out-8in has the midi channels all below their corresponding audio output track (alternating audio/midi channels). Found that you can re-arrange the midi tracks as you like, even putting them all in a folder of their own to get them out of the way. All midi tracks are invisible in the mixer.

Ooops,
The surpriseing track template only works with Surpriseing.RPP included on Zip file. I think it's some kind of bug.

Thanks for that Talisman. I got Battery and Kontakt working like that.

Its true you cant get much out of those folders. But you can put a lot in them. Send tracks work well inside them. I also run other synths inside the Kontakt folder to let them use the same effects as sample tracks.

And just coz I knew you were gonna ask; I just went and unpacked my Battery folder into the Kontakt one. All the sends stayed hooked up but now I can duck my bass with my kick drum.

This really is an elegant solution. Once I record a whole song, I can just turn off the Kontakt folder and everything is set up how I want it. In fact I guess I could just turn all the folders off as soon as I load them. They'll still be all subgrouped etc.

Heres kontakt 2 with 12 outputs and Battery with six. Just clone tracks or delete them to fit your needs and resave the templates.

Well Kontakt anyway. For some reason the Battery 3 track is to big to post.
