been using 5.04 forever and just made the fool mistake of installing 5.9 (i didn't NEED the updates). now reaper shows error message for midi devices every time I hit play

They're old devices that REAPER remembers. By default it warns if they are not connected since since v5.94. Right click on the device(s) in question in Preferences > Audio > MIDI Devices and select "Forge device" or disable the warning in Preferences > Audio.
