Thanks for the explanation. I've passed it along to two folks that send me Premiere projects.

If it works, I'll spring for a license instantly.

Reaper has small problems too in this department. Just found a bug actually and reported it.

My batch renamer of choice is probably Total Commander in Windows.

A must have for every portable recorder user :P
Bulk Rename is insane. Thanks for reminding me about it. I'll keep it on hand in my portable apps foldier.

Windows explorer can also do this natively by pressing F2, but Bulk Rename Utilities is far more powerful, with Search & and Replace, Regex, Customizable Incrementation and a lot of other nice stuffs :P

The 'link incompatible media' option you wanted produces a surprisingly interesting result in REAPER 5. The video window actually plays the edit better than I expected!

Look at this screenshot. No reference video track!!!

DO you mean that there is not a SINGLE video track but that the video editing is made by REAPER using multiple items ?

Yes. I am amazed. REAPER 5's new video features means it actually plays the original edit back!

This is awesome! Is this in a new build I assume? I'd love to try this out.

Yes. There are a few new options.

The defaults are do what it always did - build a self contained REAPER project folder with all compatible media (wav, mp3, aif etc) copied and incompatible media (non standard audio like CAF & video files) transcoded into sub folders.

However, you can now turn off each of these copy/transcode options off. If turned off, it will only link to the original media outside of the REAPER folder.

Already built, just testing now and then uploading later.

If I can get it done before the Micachu and the Shapes gig tonight!!

One of the advantages of VORDIO now being able to run 'link only' mode (turn off copy & transcode options), is that you no longer need to run VORDIO on the picture edit machine, to pack up and rename the media.

This is because when these options are turned off, filenames are not mangled, but retain their original name. (There is actually a good reason for the mangling due to working around the differences in the way audio inside video works as compared to standard audio files).

Using this method, you can receive an XML, and a separate audio folder, then relink in REAPER when it opens, using the media offline search. No need to persuade client to do anything on their machine now.

In the website you say it will reconform Premiere and FCP files, what about first conversion. I receive the file for the first time from a client and it was edited on Premiere, will it work?

Yes it will convert. In fact, it can't reconform something that it didn't convert in the first place (it needs to embed information in the REAPER item notes that is later used for reconform).

There are two methods:

* Team mode - you work with regularly with the same editor(s). This requires running VORDIO on the picture edit machine (or your machine with the picture edit drive plugged into your machine with same drive mapping). This will copy/transcode all media and pack it up into a self contained REAPER project. This is the most convenient method but it does require more cooperation with the picture editor.

* Non team mode (for this just turn off copy & transcode options) - This will require you receive the audio media separately from the XML, then when you open REAPER you use 'search missing media' to relink it all to the media.

The new layout engine is ready for XMLs from Premiere.

It builds a much nicer project now, and it also pays some attention to track order (your request), as well as colours & also organises by number of channels the item is configured to require. i.e. all your mono tracks will be together, all stereo etc.

Thanks again for your script that renames colour 'role' names. I will definitely mention it when I make the tutorial videos.

I noticed that the Premiere's defaults of giving camera audio vs normal audio files different colours produces an interesting result. They get separated out in the REAPER project, which actually seems pretty useful to me. So even if people don't intentionally set roles (like they would in FCPX), some will happen anyway.

Woh.. Thats really cool. Amazing job thanks for all the work creating and editing Vordio.

One last question:

Imagine that the editors start the montage in Adobe Premiere and I've already re-conformed my reaper project several times. But, for some weird reason, they decide to bring another editor to the team, but he edits in FCP7 or X. I would have to convert again first, then re-conform if necessary.. Correct???

And thanks again for the hard work

It is worth trying but I haven't tested it. I do have a project that is in both FCPX & Premiere so I could try with those later and see what happens.

For reconform to work, you must make sure all your media across the entire project & across all folders have unique media filenames.

So you must also make sure that no media files get renamed in the move between NLEs.

The initial conversion IS SAFE from media filename conflicts, but any subsequent reconform is definitely NOT SAFE from filename conflicts.

Most NLEs only prevent filename clashes within the same folder, so they don't always help enforce good habits if you store your media in different folders (or events in FCPX).

Some equipment also doesn't ensure filenames are unique either. I have seen problems with H4N recorded material because the auto numbering starts afresh in every folder. Have also seen this with some cameras that start counting again on each new card.

In general, for reconform to work it will require getting into some best practice habits because reconform can't be fully automated without certain assumptions. There are some dos and don'ts.

There are other issues to think about too like media file compatibility between NLEs. For instance FCPX supports CAF audio but Premiere doesn't (nor does REAPER). VORDIO actually transcodes CAF to WAV (if 'transcode incompatible media' option is turned on) when doing a basic conversion from an FCPX XML so they work in REAPER.

You will need to be careful to ensure a few conventions in advance within your team, if you are going to succeed moving between NLEs. It is stretching it to the limit!

I just downloaded it. So can check tonight.

I have had trouble importing material into 11 lately. It is refusing to import any timeline in any format for no apparent reason.

Not sure if related to the build of 11 I am using, or something else wrong with my machine. I'll see later if I can import material into 12 beta.

Oh mentioning aaf..

I have started analyzing the AAF specs and have found a way to transform them into XML.

I was investigating EDL for Media Composer support but I may have to use AAF. EDL is very limited in audio capabilities.

I am only going to support AAF with external media references (a small file with no contained media i.e. the way video projects are exchanged - video is way too huge to pack up in a file) not AAF container format editors are used to giving over to sound (large file with contained audio media).

There are advantages to doing this but it may require reminding picture editors not to select the typical AAF audio options simply out of habit.

XML will still likely be the better option though for FCPX & Premiere. Less metadata will get lost in the process.

@mrlimbic
Thanks for the infos,
Maybe when you will have time you may write an article on your site to explain what choose one format rather than a other, with details of pros and cons.
Interesting insights from some who digged deep into this.

Oh dear. Trying out Resolve 12 didn't last long.

It crashes on my main machine and I get a database error on my laptop.

This is very very beta. I can't test anything yet!

I've actually got it working (but quite buggy it seems) on my Mac pro now, but I had to unplug the monitor from my meaty graphics card and switch back to using the old one that came with the Mac and also update the CUDA drivers etc for it.

It seems to hate my newer more powerful graphics card (but it is not on Resolve's recommended list so they don't pretend to support it).

found a configuration guide for V12
http://documents.blackmagicdesign.co...2015-07-27.pdf

I may email them to see what kind of performance I should expect from my system.
12 runs better than 11 did though. Can't jump around the timeline at all though without long waits though.

@mrlimbic
I saw in PPro FCP XML export that XML files can have project marker name, position, duration, and comment.

Code:
            <marker>
                <comment>Insert fade here</comment>
                <name>Marker 1</name>
                <in>0</in>
                <out>-1</out>
            </marker>
It would be very nice if vordio could support that.

It could be able to insert marker or regions (if duration > 0) from these infos, and to insert comment as marker subtitles (readable by SWS extensions).

It is a nice way to have more dialog between video and audio editor.

What do you think of that ?

Yes I think that is a good idea. Adding markers and regions is pretty easy to do for the first conversion.

It is not clear to me though what should happen during reconform. Just replace all the previous ones?

There is a distinction between metadata that belongs to the project and metadata that belongs to the source/item media.

For source/item media metadata I would prefer it to translate into something item related in REAPER (such as take volume automation) because these automatically travel with the item during reconform (but track automation doesn't).

REAPER doesn't seem to have an equivalent of item markers or regions.

I would say, only work with Project for the moment.

And yes you are right... what about previous marker list...
Well, deleted current REAPER marker/regions list is not the solution as the audio editor may have put some of is owns.

I only see one solution :
XML markers shouldn't be converted as markers and regions directly,
but in text items,
to be use with the great Heda's script
EEL script: Show/Hide Markers using Track's empty items with notes

It is the only way to have dynamic group of markers and regions, and switchable markers backup. I use it on every project And Cockos doesn't seems to have that on the radar, so it will be the only way for a while.

I think it could be interesting... Adding a track with text items will allow
  • to preserve existing marker and regions of the project
  • to preserve items created from a previous conformation
  • to switch on and off this marker
  • to edit and color this marker more easily (we can select items, not markers)
  • to promote one of the greatest script out there
Are you familiar with Heda's script ? If not, I advice you to give it a try

Thanks for your consideration

(note: text items doesn't have name and comment sepration, but Name as first line, and comment as second would be enough :P)

I would prefer to convert into something standard in REAPER first by default, then maybe add another less standard method as an option later (checkbox to do as markers/regions or text items). I suspect many people who download the free version of VORDIO are also people trying out REAPER for first time. I want to make the defaults something obvious to non expert users.

It is not hard to move something during reconform as long as there is a way to uniquely identify it. Then i can just change it's location/duration.

My guess is that the video editor is unlikely to change the name of that marker, so it could work as an ID. And if they do change it's name, it will just become a new marker/region.

Yes, a checkbox would be nice

For the comment field... Marker Subtitles (aka Marker Notes) are not REAPER standards... It is SWS.
REAPER Markers are pretty basic (a time, a name, a color), so comment will be loose if you work with native markers features only.

So yes, a solution with native markers / regions is nice, but text items may satisfy more needs.
FOr text items, because regions came from the items itself, and because the note is displayed entirely, I don't think that a reconform function based on a ID set as item notes is the solution. Only create a new track with new text items is enough. Audio editors will still be able to switch between one or the other version if required (it is as simple as pressing the track mute button).

When it comes to markers without durations, how do you represent those as text items? Text items seems to make more sense for regions.

I am adding an option to put comments in as S&M_SUBTITLEs.

However, why does REAPER warn about extension use even if extension is definitely installed? Seems a bit excessive. See screenshot.
