Default Anybody ever get stuck on choosing a name to release your work under?

For a long time ive been trying to think of a name for my solo music

I used to call myself "Mike The Mental" i just thought it was a cool producer-esque sounding name

But now as im getting closer to being finished with the product, I am thinking that name might sound immature to some, and possibly even offensive

Another name I had was Michael & the Fifth Dimension, which im big on multiverse theory and alternate dimension theory and etc so its a name that i feel fits my aesthetic im going for, but at the same time i feel it sounds sort of stock. And then I had the idea to just shorten that up to "Mike The 5th" which I think is kind of cool but maybe a little pretencious?

What do you guys think?

Mike The Mental
or
Michael & the Fifth Dimension
or
Mike The 5th

They all sound immature to me.
But don't let this stop you from choosing one of these 3.

Love Mike the 5th but don't worry mate - you can always change it later - it's no unheard of in the business and it may end up as a fun anecdote.

Just go with your intuition and roll with it

Been using my moniker since 2000. Took me ages to find something not already in use.

The shortly after going for it and uploading stuff to mp3.com I found a poet from Sweden also using that name and I had just missed it. Google was still in its early days back then...

I contacted the guy directly and he had no problem at all with me also using synkrotron, so all was good

I suppose I could have used my own name but coming up with something (seemingly) original was considered to be a bit "cooler" at the time...

The 5th Dimension is a group from the 60s and 70s and I believe they are still active, not as original members though. Only a couple are original, I believe.

Including Marylin MCcoo and Billy Davis Jr. - Those two had a hit in 1976... "You don't have to be a star (to be in my show)".

To the OP, I like Mike the 5th and Mike Five - or M5 which would be my band's name+1 (M4) hehe.

Slightly divergent, but one of my favorite activities is keeping an eye/ear out for potential band names that come from everyday conversations and such. (Not that I have a band that needs a name, but if I ever do ...)

Just a few weeks ago we were watching TV and there was a commercial for "Cheez Its" or "Ritz" crackers that had a talking wheel of cheese. My 13-year-old daughter and I looked at each other and said "Talking Wheel Of Cheese" would make a great band name!

So there you go, yet another name for you to consider (I gladly give that one away for free).

heh- it's obvious- mike mental of the 5th with his marvelous mutating microphone...dahh. whacky is rememberal!

cost=10quid..paypal is fine.
tbh- your name is your bond- it's the only real actual contractual thing that could be binding-- made up names have little effect in any claim cases...silly but it's all down to names that may be legally binding..sigs are futile, but can be used--lots of artists multiname their products--i don't think there's actually a limit to the amount of pseudo personalities 1 may 'have'- cloaking,is an option!

You might be right about that - I've got a band project named 'The Juice Of Arthur Lemon' we gigged it a few years back here in Prague - those that didn't get the recipe pun thought it was about - well you know what they thought it was about. It doesn't matter as long as it sticks - that can be taken the wrong way - and so can that - I'll stop.

I like Mike the Fifth. It's ambiguous. is it imperative, ie, are you instructing someone to put a microphone in front of the fifth [dimension, singer, amp, X]? or maybe you are number five in a line of Michaels? Or maybe it's your fifth microphone?

It can be adapted: "mike da fit"; "plead the fifth [amendment]", "Michael of Five" for some formality.

Plus, all that aside, it's a little mysterious. Mystery generates interest, so that's a good thing.

I believe even at one point, during a sort-of reunion thing, they toured as Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. and The Fifth Dimension but venues got tired of trying to put that on the marquee...

I vote for Mike the Mental. Might some people find it possibly offensive? Sure, but if you are a musician and you're not offending somebody along the way, then you might be doing it wrong.

The names you are thinking of are very "on the nose".

If you arent going to go for your real name (which i think is the best idea), i would thik about what inspires you and makes you happy.

Think about who you are, and not what your music is.

Sometimes I see unknown artists online or on special interest nighttime radio where I think "they've put too much effort in to coming up with their pseudonym" lol

I'd say just go with whatever comes to mind at the moment. If you ever get well known enough for it to matter you can put a lot of thought in to it then. (Apologies if you're still young enough to think there's much chance that might happen :P)

Leave domain names back in the 90s, websites are very old fashioned these days - it's all social media now.

Years ago I came up with the Mike The Mental name/alterego whatever you want to call it, I view it as like a comic book character type of thing wherein I might be able to storytell a little bit or do some concepty type stuff I even have names for albums thought of lol

Demented Warrior
Twisted Mental II
Let's Get Mental
Mental World
etc...

Here's an example kind of what my music sounds like (its still being worked on)

"Mike The Mental' is asking for trouble. Imagine if a booker had a handicapped kid and was looking for a reason not to book you.

"Michael & The Fifth Dimension" begs the question "Michael who?".

"Mike The Fifth" might mutate into "Mike V". Dunno if you'd be happy with that, pronunciation ambiguity is never good.

"Mike Five" has a postmodern vibe to it though.

Oh, come on dude?! It's 2019. Just put "DJ" in front of .. whatever you want, and you're in. You're a serious act automatically.

DJ Mental. Ladykiller right there
