Default Why does splitting audio create a tick sound?

If I cut an audio segment with the split function why does this create a tick or popping sound from a seamless audio clip that I then need to repair by cross-fading where I made the split?

When I want to join an audio clip to another, I usually stretch the start of the next clip to create an overlap that will cross fade nicely. This works fine, but to minimise the stretch on the entire audio clip I normally make another cut so that the stretching doesn't create any timing issues. Is there someway to set a marker that will stretch from instead of snipping the audio ?

I know about stretch markers for stretching audio between markers but this doesn't seem to work the way I would like when i need to stretch the audio clip into the previous clip to auto cross-fade.

Because you obviously haven´t enabled auto-crossfade on split.

My question is why does splitting the audio create the noise in the first place from a seamless item. If i cut a piece of paper in two with a fine knife you won't notice it's cut until I pull it apart.

I've enabled this option temporarily but can't remember the reason I long ago turned this off.

Default <someone else can provide a better analogy>

The sheet of paper represents a zero crossing since it's not under tension. If you cut a tight-rope in half, a support post <click> will have to be placed at the cuts, or you can opt for stitching them back together (cross-fade).

Ok, i see. Is there any way to "split at nearest zero point" or something similar?
